Summer Pop-Up Concert Series

Join us for our Summer Pop-Up Concerts at UBC Robson Square! We’re bringing our most talented students to perform for you right in the heart of downtown on select Thursdays this July and August. Bring a friend, grab some lunch, and drop by our Plaza Lounge to enjoy an hour of classic tunes brought to you by the UBC School of Music.

Performers

Jennifer Lim and John Ahn

Jennifer Lim is a native Vancouverite, and is currently pursuing a Bachelor of Science at the University of British Columbia. She is an avid cellist and musician, beginning her studies with Judith Fraser at the Vancouver Academy of Music at age seven. In 2012, she joined the Vancouver Youth Symphony Orchestra and made her debut as the concerto competition winner in 2014. She has extensive orchestral experience as principal cellist and has attended numerous summer festivals, namely the Amici String Program, Rosamunde Summer Academy, and the Marrowstone Music Festival. 

Jennifer has won many accolades at the Kiwanis Music Festivals. In 2016, she was awarded runner up in the junior strings provincial division and in the following year, runner up in the senior strings national division. In addition, she was one of the scholarship recipients of the Senior Strings Competition hosted by the Vancouver Academy of Music, and performed at the Winners’ Gala Concert. She has participated in numerous masterclasses conducted by Paul Marleyn, Thomas Wiebe, Yuri Hooker, Desmond Hoebig, Amanda Forsyth, and Colin Carr. Currently, she plays with the UBC Symphony Orchestra. 

In her academic endeavors, she is studying neuroscience, environmental science, and population health as part of the Integrated Science program. Under the Department of Psychiatry, she recently completed a research project investigating the  effects of environmental sources of nitrogen oxides on Parkinson’s Disease pathogenesis. Currently, she works as an analytical chemistry research assistant and her research pertains to extracting more environmentally-friendly carbon sources for climbing chalk.

 

John Ahn was raised in Vancouver, British Columbia. He is currently pursuing a Bachelor of Computer Science at the University of British Columbia and also has a great passion for music.

John has won many 1st place prizes at the Coquitlam District Music Festival for his solo piano playing. He was also part of the Place Des Arts Chamber Music Program directed under Dr. Barry Tan, where he performed in community events, participated in masterclasses, and played in competitions. He advanced to the finals of the “Friends of Chamber Music Competition” held at the Vancouver Academy of Music and won a cash-prize winning performance, which was featured on “West Coast Classics’ , a weekly program on CFRO Coop Radio. 

Academically, John was awarded the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Award  (NSERC) and had the opportunity to work as a software research assistant at The Reliable, Secure, and Sustainable Software Lab. His work, which focuses on improving the architectural recovery of cloud-based systems, has been accepted to international academic conferences. In the future, he hopes to tie his passions together and do research to expand the capabilities of music and artificial intelligence.
