Regular Expressions in R

October 10 @ 1:00 pm - 2:00 pm

Free

Information for Participants

This workshop introduces regular expressions (regex) in R. While we do not expect extensive experience with R, we do assume knowledge of R and RStudio to the extent covered in Beginner R Part 1 and Beginner R Part 2. Being familiar with the tidyverse package may be beneficial, but we do not expect all participants to be familiar with the tidyverse syntax. At the end of this workshop, you will be able to:

  • Know what regular expressions are
  • Understand when to use them
  • Apply regex syntax in most common R scenarios

UBC Library also has a general regex workshop that provides helpful information about regex in general, which will help familiarize you with the regex syntax we cover in this workshop.

Our workshop will be one hour long, followed by an optional 30-minute practice period to reinforce what you learned or consult with the instructors. Workshop materials are available at https://ubc-library-rc.github.io/RegEx_in_R/

To participate fully you will need to install the latest versions of R and RStudio on your computer before the workshop:

About this workshop series

Regular Expressions in R is one in a series of R workshops offered by the UBC Library Research Commons. Each one-hour sesson introduces a particular task or application in R, followed by an optional 30-minute practice period with support from the instructors. The series’ goal is to introduce participants to the data analysis and visualization potential of R and to encourage further self-paced exploration.
