Industry After Academia: Getting Comfortable with Uncomfortable
Calvin Tse is a Research Scientist with Product Innovation at lululemon. In this role, he applies his academic training by asking fundamental research questions about athletic product creation and using data and insights to substantiate product claims. Calvin’s educational journey began with his MSc (McMaster University, 2016) and PhD (UBC, 2022) in clinical biomechanics and human movement, but continues to expand his skillsets in areas that he never thought he would delve into.
Before joining lululemon, Calvin gained valuable experience in the footwear and sports medicine retail industry at Kintec Footwear + Orthotics, where he developed a keen understanding of customer needs and product performance. At Stoko Design Inc., Calvin blended his academic research background with industry applications to contribute to the creation of supportive apparel, translating theoretical biomechanic principles into practical product development.
Calvin’s journey from institutional academic research to industry applications for product creation has not been straightforward. By sharing his story, he hopes to normalize the experience of hitting bumps in the road and taking detours along the career journey.
