Alex is the VP Finance at Clio, the world’s leading provider of cloud-based legal practice management software. Since joining Clio 6 years ago, he has played a key role in building financial sophistication and scaling the company’s financial operations. He leads a world-class team of finance professionals, has overseen multiple acquisitions, and played a pivotal role in Clio’s record-breaking US $900M Series F financing—the largest private tech financing in Canadian history.
After earning a Bachelor of Commerce from UBC’s Sauder School of Business, he launched his career in audit at Deloitte, deliberately gaining hands-on experience across a wide array of industries—from a publicly listed silver mine in Guatemala, to an Indigenous government in northern BC, to one of Canada’s largest retailers. He eventually realized that the fast-paced, ever-changing nature of the software industry resonated the most with his values. When an opportunity at Clio arose, he took a leap of faith to transition from professional services into private tech – a move that would define the next stage of his career.
In this session, Alex shares how he designed his career by focusing on his values and making deliberate choices that helped shape the path he is on today. From his early days in audit to finding a place in the tech industry, he’s learned that success doesn’t just happen – it’s a result of creating your own destiny. By aligning his career with what matters to him, Alex built and leads an amazing finance team at a once-in-a-lifetime company. He looks forward to sharing his journey, the lessons he has learned, and how you can apply a values-driven approach to jumpstart your own career.
