National Day of Remembrance of the Quebec City Mosque Attack and Action Against Islamophobia

January 29 marks the National Day of Remembrance of the Quebec City Mosque Attack and Action Against Islamophobia. This date was designated by the Canadian government to honour the survivors and victims of the hate-motivated attack that took place at the Islamic Cultural Centre in Sainte-Foy, Quebec in 2017. Six men were killed and 19 others were injured at their place of worship. January 29 serves as an important reminder of the need to stand up against Islamophobia and all forms of racism and hate.

In solidarity with the survivors of this attack and in remembrance of the victims, the Green Square Campaign seeks to honour those who lost their lives. The green square symbolizes the green carpets in the Mosque where the victims last stood. All are encouraged to wear a green square to stand against Islamophobia.

International Holocaust Remembrance Day

In 2005, the United Nations designated January 27 as the International Day of Commemoration in memory of the victims of the Holocaust.

This day commemorates the anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp that took place in 1945 and honours the memory of the victims and the survivors of the Holocaust (the Shoah).

6 million people of Jewish identity and millions of others were killed in the Holocaust, including those targeted based on their ability, ethnicity, religious and political beliefs, and/or sexual orientation (for example, people with disabilities, 2SLGTBQIA+ people, Roma, Black people, Slavic people and Jehova’s witnesses).

This day presents an opportunity to remember and educate current and future generation about the past, to honour the victims of the Holocaust, and, amid a rise in antisemitism and waning knowledge of this history, actively challenge hatred and discrimination in all its forms.
