Alumni Office Hours with Alex Sangha – Founder of Sher Vancouver, Documentary Film Producer, Social Worker & Counsellor | Finding Purpose: A Journey from Social Worker to Social Justice Filmmaker

Finding Purpose: A Journey from Social Worker to Social Justice Filmmaker

Alex Sangha is an award-winning social worker, documentary filmmaker, and social entrepreneur dedicated to creating positive change in the world. With a Master of Public Administration and Public Policy from the London School of Economics and a Master of Social Work from Dalhousie University, Alex brings a unique blend of public policy expertise and compassionate social work to all his endeavors. He is the founder of Sher Vancouver, a registered charity supporting LGBTQ+ South Asians and friends, and the co-founder of Goodness Pictures Ltd., a production company focusing on impactful stories.

As the producer of the award-winning short documentary My Name Was January and the feature film Emergence: Out of the Shadows, Alex is now working on his third documentary I, Migrant, which captures the experiences of Indian newcomers to Canada. His contributions to social justice have been recognized with numerous accolades, including the prestigious Meritorious Service Medal from the Governor General of Canada.

Alex will share his journey as a social entrepreneur at this event, exploring how he found meaning and purpose by merging social work with film production and charitable work. He will delve into the importance of storytelling as a tool for social change and discuss the impact of his work in fostering inclusivity, awareness, and empathy.
