BIODIVERSITY

About the Speaker:

Join renowned scholar and conservationist Dr. Vandana Shiva, along with students from UBC’s Faculty of Land and Food Systems, for the first UBC Connects Masterclass.

Dr. Vandana Shiva is an Indian scholar and environmental activist dedicated to protecting biodiversity. Her work looks at how people can produce more food, reduce hunger, cultivate better health and reduce disease and poverty through conservation of biodiversity. She has been recognized for her contributions in the fields of women and the environment, biotechnology and intellectual property rights, and ecological issues related to agriculture.

Dr. Shiva is one of the leaders and board members of the International Forum on Globalization and a figure in the global solidarity movement, which she refers to as the Earth Democracy movement. Trained as a physicist before shifting to interdisciplinary research in science, technology and environmental policy, she received her PhD in the foundations of quantum theory at the University of Western Ontario. Currently based in Delhi and Dehra Dun, India, she has authored over 20 books, including The Violence of Green Revolution and Monocultures of the Mind.

About the Masterclass:

This online Masterclass connects a small group of Faculty of Land and Food Systems students with Dr. Vandana Shiva to discuss creative solutions to real-world problems. The class is free and open to the broader UBC community, but participants are asked to register in advance.
