Re-Storying Collective Memory: Storytelling As a Form of Subversion

The UBC Global Lounge Resource Centre is thrilled to be hosting a Writer’s Series that aims to probe questions of remembering, erasure, world-making and forging paths towards counter-memories grounded in the sobering forces of lived experiences and truth. How does one tell the fullness of their story through the use of a language that is still used as a weapon of erasure? How do we take back and rewrite the narrative? How can we use storytelling as a vehicle towards an artworld that decenters western society’s fetish for commodification and orientalism?

On Tuesday, March 8th, we will be launching the series with a panel discussion highlighting the theme of Homecoming and will offer the audience some insight on the artistic brilliance of the accomplished storytellers we have invited. You will have the opportunity to hear from the creative visions of Sheung King (You Are Eating An Orange. You Are Naked), Nancy Lee (Telepresence, Tidal Traces) and Jasmin Kaur (If I Tell You The Truth).

On Wednesday March 9th from 5:30-6:30PM, PST, join Nancy Lee for their workshop “World Building For The IRL (In Real Life) Game.” Through their tech-savvy approach to storytelling, come hang out with Nancy Lee for an evening of learning how to use fiction as a gesture of hope and resisting diasporic essentialism & queer futurity.

On March 10th from 3:00-4:00PM, PST, Aaron Tang, who goes by the writer name Sheung King, will be hosting a session that will guide you through the process of writing transnational characters and a variety of narrative techniques that can be used to show and navigate transnational spaces.
