Writing in STEM: Writing to Weave Your Findings Into the Scholarly Conversation

Writing at the graduate level involves bringing findings into conversation with explanatory and methodological frameworks, and theoretical ideas and concepts. Presenting your specific study requires waves of meaning-making, articulating how your findings can be explained or how ideas are exemplified or illustrated by your evidence. When immersed in your own analysis, it is too easy to become entangled in describing every detail of your context; when reviewing literature, it is too easy to feel you need to describe it all: this workshop will provide a heuristic framework for choosing and moving from the context of your study to the broader field and back again. By raising your awareness of how and when to incorporate examples and data or concepts and ideas, you can make your writing more dynamic, persuasive and successful.
This hybrid workshop is the second in a series aimed at providing practical tools for writers. Participants might like to also sign up for “Writing for Clarity in Complexity.”
Facilitator: Dr. Jodie Martin is an educational linguist specializing in academic writing, who currently works as an Academic English Lecturer in the Science stream at Vantage College.

Location: IKBLC, Level 3, Dodson Room and on Zoom. Registrants receive the Zoom link 1 day prior to the workshop.
