Six Theories that Shaped the Modern World

March 2, 2022 @ 10:00 am - 11:30 am

$120.75

Right-wing radicalism, history as fiction, the consequences of colonialism, gender identity: the foundations for many of the debates that shape public discourse today were laid out over the course of the 20th century.

In this course, explore six theories whose impact transcended the fields from which they emerged. In each session, discuss a distinct theory, along with foundational texts and works, and consider how it continues to inform public discourse.

Week 1: Civilization – Civilization and its Discontents, 1930, Sigmund Freud.
Week 2: History – Metahistory (1973), Hayden White.
Week 3: Knowledge – The History of Sexuality (1976), Michel Foucault.
Week 4: Colonialism – Orientalism (1978), Edward Said.
Week 5: Gender and Identity – Gender Trouble (1990), Judith Butler.
Week 6: Antisemitism and Antimodernism, The Protocols of the Elders of Zion (1910).
