SBME industry guest seminar: Dr. Alborz Mahdavi (Eli Lilly)

Talk: Translating ideas into future therapies and building a biotech ecosystem
SBME is proud to host Dr. Alborz Mahdavi for a special talk. Dr. Alborz Mahdavi is currently Vice President and head of Protomer Technologies at Eli Lilly. He founded Protomer Technologies in 2015, and the company was acquired by Eli Lilly in July 2021 for a transaction value over time at over $1B. Protomer is currently a wholly owned subsidiary of Lilly. Protomer team is working on molecular sensor technologies and glucose sensing insulins. Prior to Protomer, Dr. Mahdavi worked with Prof. David Tirrell’s group in the chemistry department at Caltech where he was a guest in the department. He was the Rosen scholar in Caltech bioengineering, and during his PhD studies at Caltech he was the winner of the JDRF international diabetes innovation prize, and founded the Caltech Bioengineering Lecture Series. Prior to joining Caltech, Dr. Mahdavi was a member of Robert Langer’s group at MIT, where he developed polymeric tissue adhesive technologies and related drug delivery systems along with Prof. Jeff Karp at Harvard Medical Schools, these efforts are commercialized by Gecko Biomedical Inc.-Tissium Inc. Prior to joining MIT, Dr. Mahdavi was a member of Prof. Peter Zandstra’s group at the University of Toronto, where he developed computational and experimental frameworks for understanding cell fate mechanisms in stem cells and associated implications in regenerative medicine.
