Mental Health First Aid Training (Staff/Faculty)

April 23 @ 9:00 am - 12:30 pm

Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) is the support provided to a person who may be experiencing a decline in their mental well-being or a mental health crisis.

Mental Health First Aid Training is an evidence based, internationally recognized program through the Mental Health Commission of Canada.

In this training, participants will learn how to recognize signs that a person may be experiencing a decline in their mental well-being or a mental health crisis and encourage that person to:

  • Talk about declines in their mental well-being
  • Discuss professional and other supports that could help with recovery to improved mental well-being
  • Reach out to these supports
  • Assist in a mental health or substance use crisis
  • Use MHFA actions to maintain one’s own mental well-being

This is an 8-hour course made up of a self-directed module (pre-work, approx. 1 hour) followed by two synchronous virtual sessions (each 3 hours and 30 minutes in length).

Participants are required to complete the pre-work (Module 1) before participating in the two synchronous virtual sessions (Modules 2 and 3).

In order to receive the certificate of completion, you must complete the pre-work (Module 1) and attend both synchronous sessions (Modules 2 and 3).

Important Notes:

Space is limited and there is a minimum number of participants required to run the course. Please ensure that you can attend. If you have registered and can no longer attend, please drop the course as soon as you are able to allow others to register.

Participants will not be admitted if they join after the first 15 minutes of the course has passed and will not be eligible for a course certificate if they miss more than 30 minutes of material.

What to expect during the training:

  • This is a high engagement training that includes group discussions and breakout rooms. Participation also includes interactions with the group and facilitators via Zoom chat and through PowerPoint annotations.
  • For participant and facilitator safety, we encourage participants to have your cameras on during the training when possible.
