Decolonial Partnerships in Fisheries Science
February 7 @ 11:00 am - 12:00 pm
Speaker: Dr. Caroline Ferguson Irlanda, Stanford University
Linda Tuhiwai Smith famously wrote that “research” is a dirty word in Indigenous communities. Yet these communities have stewarded marine ecosystems since time immemorial and have a wealth of knowledge to contribute to the global crisis of fisheries decline. In order to learn from these stewards, it is a moral imperative and a practical necessity that we reimagine the relationship between “researcher” and “researched” in fisheries science. In this talk, Dr. Ferguson will present an alternative model for fisheries research that we are developing in Belau (Palau), one whose aim is decolonization, which foregrounds youth voices, connects stewards across generations, respects sacred knowledge, and relies on reciprocal relations.
