CGSHE Speaker Series with Dr. Danya Fast

ABOUT THE TALK

Among young people who use drugs in the context of unstable housing and homelessness in Vancouver, romantic relationships can powerfully shape understandings of what is right and wrong and which actions to take during pregnancy and early parenting. In this talk, I will describe how gendered moral worlds frequently clash with the imperatives of healthcare, criminal justice, and child protection systems, often further entrenching young people in cycles of loss, defeat, and harm.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER

Danya Fast is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Medicine at UBC and an Associate Member of UBC’s Department of Anthropology. Her current anthropological and community-based participatory research focuses on tracing the substance use and healing trajectories of young people who use drugs as these individuals navigate multiple systems of care and supervision and ongoing overdose and housing crises.
