Enhancing clinical outcomes with self-compassion
Self-compassion is the capacity to attend to one’s own suffering with tenderness, nonjudgment, and understanding, and a heartfelt motivation to alleviate it. Over the past two decades, there has been an explosion of research on the benefits of self-compassion, showing associations with well-being, life satisfaction, and resilience to emotional and physical difficulties. This presentation features research on the role of self-compassion in enhancing clinical outcome in eating disorders treatment. It reviews i) longitudinal research linking barriers to self-compassion and clinical outcome, ii) qualitative findings on how recovered individuals overcame barriers to self-compassion, and iii) relations among compassion and self-compassion in clinicians and their delivery of collaborative, patient-focused care. Together, this research suggests that self-compassion can transform both our own, and our patients’ well-being and experiences of treatment.
