Preparing Students to Write: Using Team-Based Learning to Boost Student Confidence

June 1 @ 1:00 pm - 2:30 pm

Free

This event is part of the CTLT Spring Institute, taking place from May 31–June 3, 2022. To view all events, visit https://institute.ctlt.ubc.ca/spring-institute/spring-institute-events/

This interactive workshop will introduce instructors to team-based learning (TBL)‚ an approach that uses a flipped classroom and collaborative, active learning activities to foster student engagement and learning; and strategies where instructors can use TBL to prepare students for writing assignments.

While TBL is commonly used in STEM courses, it is less commonly used in writing courses or in lessons that focus on writing. However, TBL is also ideally suited to providing explicit writing instruction that helps build student confidence prior to a writing assignment, like a research paper, proposal, or article/book review.

In this workshop, you will:
– Learn the steps involved in TBL and their pedagogical value
– Learn which strategies you can use to utilize TBL to prepare students to produce a genre of writing
– Experience a short sample TBL session

The session will close with a discussion of strategies each of us can use to utilize TBL in our own courses, for a single lesson, a single module, or to support students throughout the term as they work on a large research writing project.

This session was also presented at the 2021 Winter Institute, and because of its popularity we are featuring it again for those who missed it the first time around.

Facilitator:
– Dr. Rebecca Carruthers Den Hoed, Assistant Professor of Teaching, Writing, Research, and Discourse Studies (WRDS) in School of Journalism, Writing, and Media (JWAM)
