Only Humans! An Incubator Session for “AI-lite” Writing-based Courses

This session is designed for instructors who wish to limit the use of AI tools in their course assignments because its use counters the fundamental knowledge and skills their courses assess.

While we know that almost no take-home writing assignments can be “AI-proof,” many instructors see the value in having students develop and demonstrate their own fundamental thinking, analysis, and communication skills in written course work – with limited or no use of AI tools. The challenge now is to provide clear expectations and a compelling rationale that will help students understand and value the connection to their own learning, and to consider the ideal forms of assessment to demonstrate that learning.

To support you in meeting these challenges, this session will share ideas and resources developed by the TLEF project, “We’re Only Human: Educative Frameworks for Artificial Intelligence, Academic Integrity, and Writing in the Faculty of Arts,” and provide opportunities to collaboratively create, brainstorm, or troubleshoot plans for your “AI-lite” writing classroom.

If you are a human instructor who is looking for ideas and feedback from another human instructor – rather than from ChatGPT – this session is designed for you!

In this session, participants will have a chance to collaboratively develop or workshop:

• Learning outcomes, assignment criteria, and/or course polices that support a clear and compelling rationale for how/why AI use is not permitted in their course
• Strategies to motivate students to buy in to this approach and understand the connection to and value of their learning
• Forms of assessment that minimize the use or value of GenAI
