Navigating Responsible Use of GenAI in Teaching & Learning – Developing UBC-Wide Principles and Guidelines

May 7 @ 11:00 am - 12:00 pm

This event is part of the 2024 Celebrate Learning Week, taking place from May 6–10, 2024.

GenAI tools have made an impact in the world of higher education, raising questions around ethical and responsible use of the tools in the classroom for both instructors and students. Since September 2023 an Advisory Committee for GenAI in Teaching and Learning has been working on a set of Principles and Guidelines to address key questions around GenAI tools in teaching and learning at UBC. These guidelines will add to the existing guidance at UBC stating that GenAI use is a course or program level decision and provide further consideration of how these tools can be used responsibly in teaching and learning activities.

How can instructors use GenAI tools in their teaching ethically and responsibly? How are students allowed to use the tools for their academic work and when might GenAI be considered to be academic misconduct? This session gives you a chance to engage in a discussion with those who are forming new university-wide guidelines around the use of GenAI tools in teaching and learning at UBC.

A cross-campus panel – featuring instructors, students, and staff – will share general topics in the developing guidelines and discuss questions from the UBC community around key areas including how GenAI can enhance education; how to mitigate risks; academic integrity; ethical considerations; and intellectual property and privacy when using GenAI tools. The session will present work the committee has been doing to develop principles and guidelines and outline key questions that arose during consultation and drafting phases.

This panel is aimed at instructors, staff and students who want to learn more about the use of GenAI in teaching and learning at UBC. Participants will be invited to share questions in advance and live questions will also be taken from the audience.

  • Vice-Provost and Associate Vice-President Teaching and Learning, pro tem (UBCV)
  • Members of the Advisory Committee on GenAI in Teaching and Learning from both UBC Vancouver and UBC Okanagan campuses.

This event will be hosted on Zoom.
