Journey into Course Design – April 2024
April 17 @ 9:00 am - 12:00 pm
In-person
This is a two-part in-person workshop, though you are welcome to attend only one day. Registration closes April 12.
Keen to learn about learner-centred course design?
Have a course or module to design and you’re not sure where to start?
In this engaging two-part in-person workshop, you will journey through three stages of course design: reflecting on situational factors, crafting learning outcomes, and exploring assessment options and instructional strategies to support learners.
This workshop is for instructors who are designing courses or modules. Staff in co-curricular roles who design workshops and non-credit courses will also find this workshop helpful to their design process. In this workshop you will apply the course design concepts directly to a course or module — you should come prepared with a course to re/design, or have a project in mind that you could work on, in order to apply these concepts.
This workshop relies on the active participation of all learners; there will be small and large group discussions and opportunities to work on your own course plan.
A brief pre-work activity (~ 30 mins) will be circulated a week in advance. Please bring your pre-work with you to the workshop. There is also some individual work to complete between the two sessions (less than one hour). If you have any questions or concerns with attendance, please email ainsley.camps@ubc.ca to discuss your options
By the end of the two-part workshop, you will:
- Understand the stages of learner-centred course design
- Value the role of learning outcomes
- Expand your assessment toolkit
- Explore instructional strategies and active learning techniques
