Equitable and Targeted Pathways towards SDG-3 Acceleration in Low-Resource Settings: Lessons from Ethiopia

Speaker: Fentabil Getnet Yimer, National Data Management and Analytics Center, Ethiopian Public Health Institute
Wednesday Apr 22, 2026, 12-1:30 pm PDT | SPPH 219 or via Zoom | Register

Ethiopia has achieved notable progresses in expanding health services for over two decades; however, the country still remains off-track on many SDG-3 targets, with persistent geographic and socioeconomic inequities. This talk presents an evidence-driven approach combining trend forecasting, scenario modeling, and evidence-guided planning to identify high-impact pathways for accelerating progress. It highlights how targeted investments, equity-focused interventions, and better alignment of resources can substantially reduce preventable deaths and close critical gaps to accelerate progress towards SDG-3 targets. The session offers practical insights for policymakers, researchers, and global health partners working in resource-constrained settings.

Fentabil Getnet Yimer is a senior public health researcher with over a decade of experience in infectious diseases, health systems, policy analysis, and program evaluation in Ethiopia and across global health contexts. He currently leads the Decision Science initiative at the Ethiopian Public Health Institute’s National Data Management and Analytics Center, where he drives advanced analytics and evidence-to-policy translation. He previously served as Director of NDMC, overseeing national evidence synthesis, data systems strengthening, and strategic decision-support functions. His expertise spans health policy analysis, sector-wide and program evaluations, stakeholder coordination, and evidence-informed planning, with technical leadership roles in SDG-3 progress evaluation and development of acceleration plan. He holds a PhD in Public Health (Infectious Disease Epidemiology) and completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the Takemi Program in International health, Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health.
