A critical look at the factors that shape the definition of, and research on, depression and its treatment

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
By the end of the presentation, attendees will be able to:
1. Explain the evolution of “depression” from a maladaptation to a comprehensive disease.
2. Describe how institutional corruption has promoted overdiagnosis and overtreatment of depression in primary care.
3. Outline the lack of evidence supporting the treatment of patients with mild to moderate depression.
4. Describe how a medical nihilism approach can lead to a more temperate approach to the use of medicines and medical interventions.

SPEAKER:
Dr. Allen Shaughnessy received his Doctor of Pharmacy degree from the Medical University of South Carolina and his Masters in Medical Education from the University of Dundee. He has completed a faculty development fellowship and the Department of Health and Human Services Primary Care Health Policy Fellowship. He has edited several books and published over 200 papers in the areas of family medical education, continuing medical education, evidence-based medicine, pharmacology, prescription writing, and medical information management. He has been teaching in family medicine since 1987.
