CHSPR Seminar | Traumatic Spinal Cord Injury in BC: Exploring 20 Years of Data

Traumatic Spinal Cord Injury (TSCI) is a debilitating condition that can have significant effects on physical function and overall quality of life. Treatment and management are challenging and costly to health care systems, society, and the individual as they absorb privately borne costs that are not reflected in public health spending. To ascertain the most comprehensive rates of TSCI at the population level, administrative data is often used, recording each time a patient accesses health services. To better understand the changing epidemiology of TSCI, administrative datasets linked with clinical registry research can provide further insights.

Dr Michael Bond is an Orthopaedic Spine Specialist working at Vancouver General Hospital, having completed residency training at UBC, with fellowships at the University of Calgary and Oxford University in Adult Complex Spine Surgery. He is currently a PhD student under the supervision of Dr Jason Sutherland evaluating access to care for orthopaedic procedures and evaluating the landscape of traumatic spinal cord injury. His current endeavors involve leveraging population and administrative databases to develop innovative methods for monitoring wait times, serving as an essential indicator of accessibility to specialized orthopaedic care.
