BCCHR Discovery Talk – Dr. David Malkin

A special guest speaker is coming to the BC Children’s Hospital Research Institute on April 27 to give a Discovery Talk; Dr. David Malkin from The Hospital for Sick Children and the University of Toronto.
Dr. Malkin’s research program focuses on genetic and genomic mechanisms of childhood cancer susceptibility which he has explored particularly in the context of TP53 and Li-Fraumeni syndrome. Recently, his work has addressed the application of genomics to develop rational clinical surveillance and treatment guidelines for children and adults at genetic ‘high risk’ for cancer. He has published over 250 peer-reviewed articles and has received several awards recognizing his dedication to clinical care, advocacy, research, medical education and mentorship. His research has been funded by the Terry Fox Research Institute, Canadian Cancer Society, Canadian Institutes for Health Research, Canada Foundation for Innovation, Genome Canada, the National Institutes of Health (US) and the Department of Defense (US).
Dr. Malkin will be giving a talk entitled; “The Li-Fraumeni Syndrome Landscape: A Window to Cancer Prediction and Prevention”.
Li-Fraumeni syndrome (LFS) represents the paradigm of hereditary cancer predisposition syndromes. It is caused by heritable mutations in the TP53 tumor suppressor gene. This seminar will touch on current progress and future directions in understanding the basis of the genetic and phenotypic heterogeneity of LFS and how it is possible to harness new discoveries to enhance opportunities for early detection and pharmacologic prevention of cancer in TP53 mutation carriers.
This will be a hybrid Seminar, with coffee and baked goods in the atrium after the presentation for people attending in person.
As it will be a hybrid seminar, all attendees must be fully vaccinated (two doses of SARS-CoV-2 vaccine) and masks are still mandatory. Although physical distancing is no longer required, we ask that everyone respect the personal space of others.
