Embracing Your Authentic Self: A Career Starter Discussion

Sami is a values-based leader who strives to effect positive change in the government, and non-profit sectors, with the aim of uplifting our communities. Sami holds an MBA from the Sauder School of Business, a Bachelor’s degree from UBC’s School of Kinesiology and is currently working as a Senior Consultant in Deloitte’s Public Sector Transformation practice.

Throughout her undergraduate years and early career, Sami struggled with feeling like an imposter and succumbed to the pressure of projecting an image that was not authentic to herself, leading to burnout. However, with the advent of the Black Lives Matter movement and the conversation surrounding systemic bias and anti-racism in Canada, Sami underwent a transformational shift in how she perceived her identity.

Rather than considering it a hindrance, she began to appreciate and recognize the significance of her identity in the context of Canadian society. In this session, Sami will share her personal and professional experiences and explain how she has altered her approach to inclusivity, by leading with empathy, and emphasizing the importance of bringing one’s authentic self to the workplace.

Drawing on research and current trends, Sami hopes to inspire all students to introspect and value their unique intersectional identities before embarking on their career paths.
