Tesla, Algae, and Ice Cream: Restoring Planetary Balance and Reversing Climate Change (A World Outlook)

Presenter : Satyan Chandra – Semi-Truck Engineering Lead, Tesla

As the broader world adopts more sustainable forms of energy and transportation, the pressure on resources, paradoxically, has not decreased. Today, we are witnessing fewer people living below the poverty line, purchasing power is on a steady rise, and there are more sources of income per family. In addition, population levels continue to increase which equates to more eating, buying, driving, and flying. Consumerism has made a furtive recovery and threatens to offset the advances made towards sustainability.

In this fast-paced, world energy outlook tech-talk, Satyan Chandra, Semi-Truck Engineer Lead at Tesla, shares his insights on the key global energy problems facing us today. He will

• Suggest targeted ways to address them
• Highlight the resolute part Tesla has played so far and
• Focus on how Tesla will continue to catalyze renewable transport and energy

This thought-provocative tech-talk seeks to shed light on how everyone, including UBC students, recent graduates and faculty, has a role to play (at Tesla or elsewhere) and needs to directly tackle the rapidly advancing energy crisis.

About the Presenter

Today, Satyan Chandra leads the engineering and systems design at Tesla for the Semi-Truck program, the world’s first long-haul electric Semi-Truck. During his 10-year tenure at Tesla, his efforts have been widespread and he has played a key role in the systems design and development of Model S, Model X, Model 3, Model Y and Roadster 2.0 (which has yet to be launched).

Satyan attended UBC Engineering during his freshman year, before transferring to the US where he obtained his Bachelor’s degree at Brigham Young University and later his Master’s at Stanford University. Originally from the western coast of India, Satyan grew up fascinated with cars and engineering. He taught himself how to drive at age 7 and won many go-Kart races.
