SUMMARY:Susan Aglukark and PIQSIQ
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a celebration of arctic sounds and Inuit artistry featuring legendary singer-songwriter Susan Aglukark and acclaimed throat-singing duo PIQSIQ. \nSusan Aglukark is a Canadian icon and is the first Inuk artist to ever win a Juno Award. Her seminal 1995 album This Child went triple platinum in Canada\, aided by the runaway hit “O Siem.” Now celebrating its 30th anniversary\, Aglukark has since gone on to write and record 10 albums\, author two children’s books\, earn a Governor General’s Performing Arts Award for lifetime artistic achievement\, and is an officer of the Order of Canada. But more importantly\, This Child provided her with a platform to speak up\, learn\, heal\, and share\, which has been her ultimate calling. Her passionate advocacy propelled her to found the Arctic Rose Project\, which gives Inuit and Northern Indigenous youth a safe after-school space\, and she is the co-founder of the Aboriginal Literacy Project. \nInuit throat-singing sisters Inuksuk Mackay and Tiffany Ayalik blend tradition with natural and technological inspiration. Using only their vocals and live looping techniques\, the duo perform katajjaq\, Inuit throat-singing\, to create soundscapes that evoke the haunting darkness of perennial Arctic winters. In Inuktitut\, “piqsiq” is a windstorm that conjures the impression of snow falling back up towards the sky. This phenomenon has coloured their “riveting… and truly haunting” (Vancouver Sun) music\, while pushing the tradition of Inuit throat-singing forward as a living art. While katajjaq was once outlawed and almost extinct\, PIQSIQ are reclaiming their culture with every spellbinding performance.

SUMMARY:Ibram X. Kendi in Conversation
DESCRIPTION:Ibram X. Kendi is one of the world’s foremost historians of racism and a leading antiracist scholar. Eleven of his seventeen books have been New York Times bestsellers\, including the international bestseller How to Be an Antiracist\, which was named essential reading and one of the best books of the year by multiple publications. He makes a rare appearance in Vancouver at the Chan Centre for the Performing Arts with his latest pivotal work of nonfiction\, Chain of Ideas: The Origins of Our Authoritarian Age.  \nThis highly anticipated new work from the National Book Award-winning author charts how the “great replacement theory” has become a dominant political idea of our time and ushered in an antidemocratic age. Coined in 2011 by a French novelist who argued that Black and Brown immigrants were “invading” Europe\, this dangerous theory has been seized by popular and ruling politicians in every region of the world to erode democratic norms in the name of preventing demographic change\, spreading with alarming speed to countries as distinct as the USA\, Russia\, El Salvador\, Brazil\, Italy\, and India. \nIn this unmissable conversation with Terri Givens—Professor of Political Science at UBC and the author of Radical Empathy: Finding a Path to Bridging Racial Divides and Reckoning: Creating Positive Change through Radical Empathy—Kendi offers an unsettling but indispensable global history of how great replacement theory brought humanity into this authoritarian age—and how we can free ourselves from it. \nDiscounted $25 tickets are available for students\, and anyone under the age of 25.

SUMMARY:CAE Public Seminar | Finding Common Ground on Animal Welfare
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Bob Fischer\, Professor of Philosophy\, Texas State University \nThere are philosophical frameworks that allow us to say that the feasible policy reforms are usually the right reforms. According to these frameworks\, respecting differences in a pluralistic society just means allowing competing values to shape policy\, even if that means that animals are much worse off than they would be in a political order that was less deferential to certain stakeholders’ values. This talk considers the ethical advantages and disadvantages of this kind of thinking\, ultimately recommending a pragmatic approach toward the compromises required for change. \nBob Fischer is an American philosopher whose work focuses on ethics\, especially animal ethics\, and epistemology. He is a professor of philosophy at Texas State University and a senior research manager at Rethink Priorities\, where he studies topics such as animal welfare and interspecies comparisons of welfare. Fischer has written and edited numerous books on animal ethics and philosophy\, including The Ethics of Eating Animals and Animal Ethics: A Contemporary Introduction.
