SUMMARY:UBC Humanities In Healthcare Narrative Medicine Case Competition
DESCRIPTION:To promote the development of narrative competence in healthcare\, the Narrative Medicine Case Competition (NMCC) brings together participants from diverse disciplines to tackle a patient or community health crisis case. Participants will be placed into interdisciplinary teams and collaborate to design a comprehensive treatment plan or practical tool to support patient care.\n\nThe design process challenges teams to consider accessibility\, interprofessional communication\, and real-world feasibility. Participants will also address barriers faced by healthcare providers and explore attainable\, effective strategies for improving patient outcomes. The goal of NMCC is to offer a hands-on opportunity to navigate the multidimensional challenges of healthcare delivery\, guided by mentors with academic\, clinical\, and patient-centered experience.HIH’s Narrative Medicine Case Competition will have students working in groups of 3–4 to analyze a hypothetical patient case. Teams will present a plan that addresses the patient’s medical needs and personal goals\, while also reflecting on systemic barriers that impact care and proposing ways to overcome them. This case will serve as a starting point for meaningful conversations about patient-centered care among future healthcare professionals.

SUMMARY:Secrets on our Doorstep: Vancouver and the Shadow on the World Cup
DESCRIPTION:As Vancouver prepares to host 2026 World Cup games—a crowning feat for hometown FIFA Vice President Victor Montagliani—a chilling local history haunts the celebration. While Montagliani scaled soccer’s elite ranks\, a shadow spread across the city and country he helped lead. In 2008\, Canada Soccer and the Vancouver Whitecaps quietly severed ties with coach Bob Birarda. At the time\, Montagliani told players and the public that the break was one of “mutual consent\,” and Birarda was sent off with best wishes. In reality\, multiple complaints that Birarda had engaged in predatory behaviour had been ignored. \nThis institutional silence allowed Birarda to coach local girls for another decade until whistleblowers lifted the curtain on this history of abuse. Amid international media interest\, reactivated police investigations\, and political intervention\, Birarda was eventually jailed in 2022 for sexual assault. With World Cup celebrations underway in Vancouver\, a dark legacy remains: one of an elite culture that chose to protect itself with silence and lawyers while a predator remained on their doorstep. \n\n \nMatthew Hall has written about the intersection of sports\, crime\, culture\, and politics for The Guardian\, Sydney Morning Herald\, and Foreign Policy\, among others. He covered the controversial bids for the 2018 and 2022 FIFA World Cups\, eventually hosted by Russia and Qatar. He has extensively covered abuse in sports and systemic cover-ups by sports organizations and educational institutions across North America. His work has triggered or been used in multiple investigations into sports organizations and abuse. He is based in New York City. His book\, The Away Game\, was made into an award-winning film. \n

SUMMARY:Introduction to the Unix Shell
DESCRIPTION:This workshop will introduce the Unix shell\, a powerful way to communicate with your computer more directly through a command line interface. There are many ways to interact with a computer. Most of the time we click on things and select options with a cursor through a graphical user interface (GUI). A command line is exactly what it sounds like\, a way of writing commands to your computer line by line and is incredibly powerful. In this workshop we will show you how to navigate through different parts of your system and introduce some of the most useful commands to be aware of. \nNo previous experience with the command line is required. This workshop is for beginners. \nPre-workshop setup \nPlease have a laptop ready for this workshop. We will be using the Unix shell for most of the workshop. If you have a Mac or a Linux laptop you don’t need to install or enable anything. If you are using a Windows10 PC you will need to turn on the “Windows Subsystem for Linux” setting as per these instructions. \nThis workshop is part of the Core Skills series. \nIf you have any questions\, concerns\, or accessibility needs please email digital.scholarship@ubc.ca.
