SUMMARY:Meditation & Visualization Workshop (Green Collective Wellbeing Series)
DESCRIPTION:This workshop weaves together the theory and science of meditation — exploring its profound benefits for wellbeing — with an understanding of how meditative practice can serve as a bridge toward unity and oneness with all life. The majority of the session will be devoted to guided meditation and visualization practices\, inviting participants into a deeper experience of the interconnection between humanity and the broader family of life. \nDr. Farah Shroff has practiced meditation throughout her adult life. She is an active member of a meditation community with centres on these lands and across many countries worldwide. Meditation is a cherished and central part of her path\, and one to which she is deeply committed. She is currently leading a randomized clinical trial investigating yoga as a treatment for osteoporosis. A faculty member in the Department of Family Practice at UBC’s Faculty of Medicine\, she also maintains an active research collaboration with colleagues at Harvard University\, where she was awarded a fellowship at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health in 2021–22. \nA “Student / Senior discount” will be available to apply on the registration page. \nIMPORTANT: You may wish you bring your own meditation cushion (if you have one).

SUMMARY:Natalia Lafourcade – The Cancionera Tour
DESCRIPTION:Natalia Lafourcade\, one of the most influential voices in Latin music\, brings her Cancionera Tour to Vancouver’s Chan Centre. \nMaking her Vancouver debut\, she will perform with just her guitar and voice. Born in Mexico City\, she has spent over two decades reimagining Latin American music\, invigorating its heritage with her modern touch. \nDeclared the “21st Century’s Guardian of Cultural Memory” by NPR\, her work weaves Mexican folklore with pop and jazz\, and is held up as a “testament to the creativity and pride that unspools when one taps into tradition.” \nA master of innovation and collaboration\, Natalia Lafourcade has worked with icons across genres including Jon Batiste\, David Byrne\, Gustavo Dudamel\, and Los Ángeles Azules. SUMMARY:UBC Climb for Conservation
DESCRIPTION:Rise Above the Canopy. Protect What Grows Beneath.\nJoin the UBC Climb for Conservation at UBC Botanical Garden on June 20\, 2026.\n\n\n\nClaim Your Spot in the Canopy\n\n\n\n\nMost people who visit UBC Botanical Garden look up at the trees. On June 20\, 2026\, a group will climb into the canopy itself. While raising funds to protect the Amami Maple\, one of the world’s most endangered maple species\, you’ll experience the Garden from a whole new perspective\, 160 feet above the forest floor. \nThis is the UBC Climb for Conservation. It is a mental and physical challenge\, a rare and unforgettable view and a chance to be part of conservation work that has been building here for more than 110 years. The Amami Maple grows on a single steep hillside on a small island in southern Japan. There are only twelve mature trees left in the wild\, and just three produce seeds. A single environmental disaster could wipe out the entire wild population overnight. \nWhether you’re looking for a new challenge\, a deeper connection to nature or a meaningful way to give back\, this climb is for you.

SUMMARY:World Refugee Day 2026
DESCRIPTION:Multi-Agency Partnership (MAP) BC and the UBC Centre for Migration Studies (CMS) invite you to World Refugee Day 2026 — Strengthening Borders\, Weakening Rights? — from 12:00 pm to 3:30 pm at 312 Main\, Vancouver.\nWorld Refugee Day honours those who have been forced to flee their home countries to seek safety for themselves and their families elsewhere. At a time when growing global conflicts are displacing millions of people\, many countries are also closing their doors to those seeking protection by toughening legislation and criminalizing migrants. After decades of building a reputation as a country that welcomes refugees\, Canada has also joined this troubling trend. \nWith the passage of Bill C-12\, Strengthening Canada’s Immigration System and Borders Act\, Canada has moved away from its longstanding humanitarian values. The barriers it creates may leave many asylum seekers vulnerable\, without legal status or access to essential services. Are these laws strengthening border controls at the expense of refugees’ rights? What is the human cost of this Bill\, not just for those seeking protection\, but for the communities that seek to welcome them? \n\nProgram\n12:00 – 12:45 PM: Information Fair with Refugee Serving Agencies\n12:45 – 1:00 PM: Land Acknowledgement and Opening remarks by MAP BC and CMS\n1:00 – 2:30 PM: Panel Discussion: Bill C-12 and the Human Cost of Canada’s Border Reform\n2:30 – 2:50 PM: Storytelling\n3:00 – 3:30 PM: Information Fair with Refugee Serving Agencies\n\nAbout the Speakers\nPanel Discussion: Bill C-12 and the Human Cost of Canada’s Border Reform\nModerator\nDr. Lisa Ruth Brunner — Research Associate\, University of British Columbia Centre for Migration Studies \n\n\nSpeakers\nM. SUMMARY:Powerful searching with Regular Expressions
DESCRIPTION:Regular expressions are a powerful and standardized way of representing patterns in text using special symbols and syntax. A core part of many programming languages\, search engines\, text editors\, and other commonly-used software\, regular expressions have a surprisingly wide array of uses\, from efficiently finding strings of text in large data sets\, to easily formatting complex documents\, to quickly replacing many small everyday tasks that might otherwise require writing shell scripts or other programs. \nThis hands-on workshop introduces regular expressions (regex) from the ground up. After this workshop\, attendees will understand basic regular expression syntax; they will be able to apply regex syntax in common applications; they will understand when it might be appropriate to use regex; and they will be able to analyze their own workflows and adapt regex solutions to support them. \nThis workshop is part of the Core Skills series. \nIf you have questions\, concerns\, or accessibility needs\, please email digital.scholarship@ubc.ca. \nTo keep up-to-date with all our workshops\, consults\, and events\, subscribe to the UBC Library Research Commons monthly newsletter.

SUMMARY:Heated Rivalry Lightning Lecture and Discussion Mini-Series – Lecture 2
DESCRIPTION:A veritable cultural phenomenon\, Heated Rivalry has amassed a large global following and a devoted fanbase. As a media text\, the show also invites us to think about and unpack significant and enduring social issues. Join fellow loons this summer for the Heated Rivalry Lightning Lecture and Discussion Mini-Series\, hosted by UBC’s Centre for Asian Canadian Research and Engagement.  \nEach event in the ACRE’s Heated Rivalry LL&D Mini-Series will feature a 15-minute “lightning lecture” by ACRE Co-Director Dr. JP Catungal\, focusing on a scene or two from the series. This will be followed by 45 minutes of open small group discussion with fellow attendees. This session takes place on Wednesday\, June 24th from 4:00pm – 5:30pm focusing on Asian Canadian Model Minoritization:   \n“A lot of kids are gonna be looking up to you”: Positioning Shane Hollander as a racialized model minority   \nEarly on in the series\, Yuna Hollander (Shane’s mom) reminds him that his drafting as a professional hockey player is significant not just for him\, but also to other racialized people who struggle with the lack of racial representation in hockey. This session will focus on Shane Hollander’s positioning as a model minority and how it impacts his life\, including his complicated romance with Ilya Rozanov.   \nThe Heated Rivalry LL&D Mini-Series is a feature event of “Browning Asian Canada”\, a public research and engagement series convened by Dr. JP Catungal.    \nThis event is free and open to all\, but each event will be capped at 30 people.
