SUMMARY:CAE Public Seminar | Can You Tell My Story? Exploring Ethical Storytelling in Documentary Film Making
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Viveka Melki\, Melki Films \nDocumentary filmmaking has the power to shape public understanding\, influence policy\, and transform how societies perceive people and communities. Yet with this influence comes profound ethical responsibility. How can filmmakers move beyond simply telling stories about people to creating stories with them? What does it mean to practice ethical storywork when narratives emerge from experiences of trauma\, marginalization\, and systemic injustice? \nJoin award-winning filmmaker Viveka Melki\, founder of Melki Films and CAE Ethics Fellow Larissa Maxwell for a thought-provoking conversation exploring the evolving ethics of second-person storywork and documentary filmmaking. Drawing from decades of experience documenting complex social issues – including human trafficking\, sexual exploitation\, financial crime\, prisoners of war\, queer communities\, and older adults – we will reflect on how trauma-informed practice\, lived experience inclusion\, and collaborative storytelling ground her approach to filmmaking. This talk will examine emerging questions surrounding the evolution of consent from a one-time transaction to an ongoing relationship\, the ethical sharing of narrative power\, representation of marginalized\, racialized\, and equity-deserving communities\, and the importance of fair and holistic compensation for those whose lived experiences make these stories possible. This talk will also provide space for audience interaction.

SUMMARY:R Showcase: Statistics Canada Microdata
DESCRIPTION:Statistics Canada releases Public Use Microdata Files (PUMFs) for the Census and many of its surveys. These de-identified files contain responses at the individual level and are a rich source of data for researchers. \nThis workshop demonstrates how to access\, explore\, and analyze Statistics Canada microdata using R. We will work with the Canadian Tobacco and Nicotine Survey but the content applies to any Statistics Canada PUMF\, hundreds of which are freely available in Abacus\, UBC Library’s data repository. \nThere are no prerequisites. Participants familiar with R and RStudio are welcome to follow along on their own workstations. If you are new to R\, we recommend watching first to learn how R can be used for analysis and reproducibility\, then practicing later with the resources introduced during the session. \n  \nAbout this workshop series \nR Showcase: Statistics Canada Microdata is one of several R workshops offered by the UBC Library Research Commons. The goal of the series is to introduce participants to the data analysis and visualization potential of R and to encourage further self-paced exploration. Other workshops will be offered in fall 2027\, check the calendar for upcoming events: https://researchcommons.library.ubc.ca/events/ \n  \nIf you have any questions\, concerns or accessibility needs please email research.commons@ubc.ca.
