SUMMARY:Designing sustainable work & courageous cultures (Faculty/Staff)
DESCRIPTION:In today’s academic and institutional environments\, the pressure to do more with less is constant. Faculty\, staff\, and leaders are navigating increasing complexity\, competing demands\, and evolving expectations around wellbeing\, collaboration\, and performance. This two-part series is designed to support a shift from reactive\, individual-level coping toward more intentional\, systems-aware ways of working and leading.  \nTogether\, these sessions explore how sustainable work is shaped not only by how roles are designed\, but also by how we communicate within them. Participants will first examine burnout through the lens of job design and organizational systems\, then build the skills needed to engage in courageous\, values-aligned conversations that support healthier\, more effective working environments.  \nAudience: All faculty and staff at UBC Vancouver and Okanagan.  While particularly relevant for faculty and faculty leaders\, all staff and faculty are welcome to attend.  \nLocation: Zoom \nImportant Notes:  \n\nEach session stands on its own\, but together they offer a powerful foundation for cultivating more sustainable\, human-centered\, and courageous workplace cultures. \nIf you can only attend one session you are still welcome to enroll; you will get a lot of value from attending a single session.  \nThere will be optional breakout room activities. \nThe session will not be recorded\, but the slides will be shared. \nClosed captioning can be enabled.  \n\nWorkshop 1: Sustainable job design and burnout prevention  \nDate: Tuesday\, May 19\, 2026  \nTime: 11 am–12:15 pm   \nBurnout is often mischaracterized as an individual “resilience failure” and solutions often focus on strengthening the individual. However\, research consistently shows that burnout is an occupational phenomenon rooted in job design and marked by job demands like excessive workload. To create meaningful change\, we must look beyond individual solutions and combine them with greater awareness about how we engage with the systems we inhabit.   \nIn this practical\, research-based workshop\, we move past surface-level advice and invite participants to reflect on their relationship with exhaustion\, burnout\, and recovery. Participants will leave reminded of their own agency\, with an invitation to relate to their job demands more consciously\, and with permission to cultivate the inner resources that are essential for work and life.  \nWorkshop 2: Courageous conversations to support sustainable work  \nDate: Tuesday\, May 26\, 2026  \nTime: 11 am–12:15 pm  \nBuilding on the foundation of sustainable work\, this session focuses on the relational side of workplace culture: how we communicate\, advocate\, and navigate tension in professional environments.   \nUsing principles from Nonviolent Communication (NVC)\, participants will learn how to approach challenging conversations with greater clarity\, confidence\, and empathy. In academic and leadership settings\, where competing priorities and power dynamics can make speaking up feel difficult\, developing these skills is essential.  \nThis session will explore what gets in the way of honest dialogue\, and offer practical tools to express needs\, share feedback\, and engage in meaningful conversations that strengthen trust rather than erode it. Participants will practice reframing difficult interactions and learn how to create conditions where their perspectives can be heard and understood.  \nParticipants will leave with concrete strategies and a stronger sense of psychological permission to speak up in ways that are both effective and values-aligned.   \nYour facilitator:  \nDr. Ellen Choi (she/her) is an Associate Professor at Toronto Metropolitan University (formerly Ryerson). She received her PhD at the Ivey School of Business and her Masters degree at the London School of Economics. Her research examines employee mental health and well-being where she studies how mindfulness\, self-compassion\, and authenticity are related to how people feel and behave at work. She teaches organizational behaviour\, which covers topics such as decision making\, team effectiveness\, and leadership. She is also an executive coach\, meditation instructor\, yoga teacher and co-founder of www.thefacilitatorstore.com\, which offers training and coaching to promote workplace well-being.  \nIf you have any questions\, please email lauren.lee@ubc.ca.

SUMMARY:Who is Heard? Age\, Gender\, Belonging\, and ‘Genius’ Music
DESCRIPTION:This lecture-recital\, as part of Dr Judith Valerie Engel’s doctoral degree requirement\, explores how ideas of ‘genius\,’ meritocracy\, and success shape—and often constrain—the careers of contemporary women composers. Drawing on her thesis research with members of the Association of Canadian Women Composers\, Dr Engel’s talk brings together critical reflection and live music performance. \nThe lecture examines ongoing structural and cultural challenges in the field of composition\, including experiences of discrimination\, the legacy of #MeToo\, and the persistence of exclusionary narratives around artistic ‘genius.’ Particular attention is given to the intersection of age and gender\, such as the systemic ageism embedded in age-restricted competitions and calls for scores. At the same time\, the lecture-recital highlights how women composers are redefining and reclaiming their creative identities\, reshaping what it means to compose and to succeed on their own terms. \nThe program features live musical examples by Elinor Dunsmuir—Canada’s (mostly) undiscovered gay icon of Classical music—whose work offers a compelling historical perspective on the modes of dismissal that have long shaped the reception of women composers. Dr Engel will be joined by members of the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra and the classically-trained singer Shani Cohen. \nDr Judith Valerie Engel is an Austrian concert pianist\, musicologist\, and feminist scholar. In 2025 she completed a DPhil in Historical Musicology at the University of Oxford as a Stone-Mallabar Music Scholar at Christ Church (College). Currently\, she is finishing up a DMA at the University of British Columbia as a member of the university’s Public Scholars initiative\, and funded by the Infrastructure and Integration Lab at the Department of Sociology. \n  \n  \nShani Cohen’s rich\, powerful mezzo-soprano voice is comfortable whether on the opera stage\, the concert hall\, or the synagogue sanctuary. She has been serving as the cantor of Temple Sholom synagogue in Vancouver since 2021. She holds a Master of Sacred Music and Cantorial Ordination from the Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion in New York (2021) and a Master of Vocal Performance and Pedagogy from the University of Houston (2013).  Past credits include Marcellina (Le Nozze di Figaro)\, Giulietta (Les Contes D’Hoffman)\, Tisbe (La Cenerentola)\, Kara Sondstromm (Frau Margot)\, and Vera Boronel (The Consul). Recently\, she has performed with the Vancouver Opera Chorus\, Northwestern University\, Opera Lirica\, the Chutzpah! Festival\, the Vancouver Holocaust Education Centre\, and Temple Sholom synagogue. \nMembers of the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra: \nDomagoj Ivanovic\, violin I\nDavid Lakirovich\, violin II\nJacob van der Sloot\, viola\nEva Lakirovich\, cello

SUMMARY:UBC CPD: The Menopause Essentials: After Hours
DESCRIPTION:Following the success of The Menopause Essentials conference\, join us for a focused virtual evening session designed to continue the conversation and address the learning gaps identified by participants. This interactive session will begin with a brief expert presentation on perimenopause\, followed by an extended 90-minute audience Q&A with a panel of specialists. \nPerimenopause is often experienced as more complex and frustrating than menopause itself\, and many clinicians report uncertainty around recognition\, diagnosis\, and management. This session will explore key questions such as when (and how) to start conversations with patients\, how to approach irregular bleeding\, when endometrial testing or biopsy may be appropriate\, and strategies for suppressing and replacing hormones while tailoring therapy to individual patients. \nThe majority of the evening will be dedicated to audience questions\, with practical discussion on common concerns including libido\, brain fog\, weight gain\, hair loss\, and sleep disturbances. \nBring your questions and join us for a dynamic\, case-informed discussion aimed at improving confidence in diagnosing and supporting patients through perimenopause.
