SUMMARY:Natalia Lafourcade – The Cancionera Tour
DESCRIPTION:Natalia Lafourcade\, one of the most influential voices in Latin music\, brings her Cancionera Tour to Vancouver’s Chan Centre. \nMaking her Vancouver debut\, she will perform with just her guitar and voice. Born in Mexico City\, she has spent over two decades reimagining Latin American music\, invigorating its heritage with her modern touch. \nDeclared the “21st Century’s Guardian of Cultural Memory” by NPR\, her work weaves Mexican folklore with pop and jazz\, and is held up as a “testament to the creativity and pride that unspools when one taps into tradition.” \nA master of innovation and collaboration\, Natalia Lafourcade has worked with icons across genres including Jon Batiste\, David Byrne\, Gustavo Dudamel\, and Los Ángeles Azules. Whether reinterpreting classics or debuting new works\, she creates transcendent experiences. \nWith 18 Latin Grammys—the most ever awarded to a female artist—four Grammys\, a Rolling Stone Legend Award\, and the title of first-ever Ambassador of Music for Peace at the 19th World Summit of Nobel Peace Prize Laureates\, Lafourcade’s impact is unparalleled. \nDon’t miss your opportunity to see Natalia Lafourcade in Vancouver in this intimate setting.

SUMMARY:World Refugee Day 2026
DESCRIPTION:Multi-Agency Partnership (MAP) BC and the UBC Centre for Migration Studies (CMS) invite you to World Refugee Day 2026 — Strengthening Borders\, Weakening Rights? — from 12:00 pm to 3:30 pm at 312 Main\, Vancouver.\nWorld Refugee Day honours those who have been forced to flee their home countries to seek safety for themselves and their families elsewhere. At a time when growing global conflicts are displacing millions of people\, many countries are also closing their doors to those seeking protection by toughening legislation and criminalizing migrants. After decades of building a reputation as a country that welcomes refugees\, Canada has also joined this troubling trend. \nWith the passage of Bill C-12\, Strengthening Canada’s Immigration System and Borders Act\, Canada has moved away from its longstanding humanitarian values. The barriers it creates may leave many asylum seekers vulnerable\, without legal status or access to essential services. Are these laws strengthening border controls at the expense of refugees’ rights? What is the human cost of this Bill\, not just for those seeking protection\, but for the communities that seek to welcome them? \n\nProgram\n12:00 – 12:45 PM: Information Fair with Refugee Serving Agencies\n12:45 – 1:00 PM: Land Acknowledgement and Opening remarks by MAP BC and CMS\n1:00 – 2:30 PM: Panel Discussion: Bill C-12 and the Human Cost of Canada’s Border Reform\n2:30 – 2:50 PM: Storytelling\n3:00 – 3:30 PM: Information Fair with Refugee Serving Agencies\n\nAbout the Speakers\nPanel Discussion: Bill C-12 and the Human Cost of Canada’s Border Reform\nModerator\nDr. Lisa Ruth Brunner — Research Associate\, University of British Columbia Centre for Migration Studies \n\n\nSpeakers\nM. Yanni Nicolidakis-Mustafa — Lawyer\, Edelmann and Co \nSaleem Spindari — Regulated Canadian Immigration Consultant and owner of Spindari Immigration Consulting Services \nDr. Evelyn Encalada Grez — Assistant Professor\, Labour Studies\, Sociology and Anthropology\, Simon Fraser University \n\nStorytelling\nShanga Karim — Kurdish–Canadian Writer and Journalist \n\nQuestions? Please contact admin.migration@ubc.ca.

SUMMARY:Powerful searching with Regular Expressions
DESCRIPTION:Regular expressions are a powerful and standardized way of representing patterns in text using special symbols and syntax. A core part of many programming languages\, search engines\, text editors\, and other commonly-used software\, regular expressions have a surprisingly wide array of uses\, from efficiently finding strings of text in large data sets\, to easily formatting complex documents\, to quickly replacing many small everyday tasks that might otherwise require writing shell scripts or other programs. \nThis hands-on workshop introduces regular expressions (regex) from the ground up. After this workshop\, attendees will understand basic regular expression syntax; they will be able to apply regex syntax in common applications; they will understand when it might be appropriate to use regex; and they will be able to analyze their own workflows and adapt regex solutions to support them. \nThis workshop is part of the Core Skills series. \nIf you have questions\, concerns\, or accessibility needs\, please email digital.scholarship@ubc.ca. \nTo keep up-to-date with all our workshops\, consults\, and events\, subscribe to the UBC Library Research Commons monthly newsletter.

SUMMARY:Heated Rivalry Lightning Lecture and Discussion Mini-Series – Lecture 2
DESCRIPTION:A veritable cultural phenomenon\, Heated Rivalry has amassed a large global following and a devoted fanbase. As a media text\, the show also invites us to think about and unpack significant and enduring social issues. Join fellow loons this summer for the Heated Rivalry Lightning Lecture and Discussion Mini-Series\, hosted by UBC’s Centre for Asian Canadian Research and Engagement.  \nEach event in the ACRE’s Heated Rivalry LL&D Mini-Series will feature a 15-minute “lightning lecture” by ACRE Co-Director Dr. JP Catungal\, focusing on a scene or two from the series. This will be followed by 45 minutes of open small group discussion with fellow attendees. This session takes place on Wednesday\, June 24th from 4:00pm – 5:30pm focusing on Asian Canadian Model Minoritization:   \n“A lot of kids are gonna be looking up to you”: Positioning Shane Hollander as a racialized model minority   \nEarly on in the series\, Yuna Hollander (Shane’s mom) reminds him that his drafting as a professional hockey player is significant not just for him\, but also to other racialized people who struggle with the lack of racial representation in hockey. This session will focus on Shane Hollander’s positioning as a model minority and how it impacts his life\, including his complicated romance with Ilya Rozanov.   \nThe Heated Rivalry LL&D Mini-Series is a feature event of “Browning Asian Canada”\, a public research and engagement series convened by Dr. JP Catungal.    \nThis event is free and open to all\, but each event will be capped at 30 people. SUMMARY:Homesteading: Is It The Lifestyle For You?
DESCRIPTION:Homesteading: Is It the Lifestyle for You? is a practical\, no-nonsense workshop for individuals considering a transition to land-based living or small-scale self-sufficiency. This session takes an honest look at the financial investment\, physical labor\, time commitment\, and long-term planning required to build a sustainable homestead. Participants will explore common misconceptions\, assess personal readiness\, and examine the realities of land selection\, infrastructure\, livestock care\, and daily workload. Rather than romanticizing the lifestyle\, this workshop focuses on informed decision-making and responsible preparation. With a background in professional writing and business\, she approaches homesteading through both a practical and strategic lens\, emphasizing preparation over impulse. Aly is the author of Homesteading: Is It the Lifestyle for You?\, a planning guide designed to challenge common myths and highlight the real commitments involved in self-sufficiency. Through workshops and community events\, she works to equip individuals and families with the tools needed to build sustainable\, resilient lifestyles. \nIMPORTANT: A “Student / Senior discount” will be available to apply on the registration page.

SUMMARY:The Art of the French Macaron
DESCRIPTION:Is the mini sandwich cookie as challenging as they say it is? What if you could master this fancy treat with the same confidence as a Laduree pastry chef? In this workshop\, you’ll be guided step-by-step and learn successful tips for mastering the art of the delicate meringue. Participants will also learn to make a delightful filling from scratch\, and discover pairings to enhance the flavour profile of the macaron. It’s time to showcase how you’re taking your baking to the next level! \nGrowing up\, Sharon spent a healthy amount of time entrenched in the spines of cookbooks where she soon found her creative art-form in the hobby of baking. Fascinated by the science of precise ingredient combination and the calming nature of baking\, she quickly found herself immersed and comforted by food through working in fine-dining restaurants\, facilitating community cooking classes and even creating food content for fun. \nIn her classes\, Sharon enjoys adapting her approach to teach various ages across the lifespan\, from young kids all the way to seniors. Her teaching style encourages participants to take on new challenges/recipes in the kitchen\, such as re-creating fine-dining-like dishes at home\, and explore less frequent culinary ingredients that may soon become a household staple once explored. Above all\, she hopes to share her passion for food as a way to invite connection\, discover new traditions and cultivate a shared sense of warmth in every bite. \nIMPORTANT: A “Student / Senior discount” will be available to apply on the registration page. \nNote: Please bring a small tupperware container.

SUMMARY:Introduction to Markdown digital workflows
DESCRIPTION:Plain text formats have received increasing attention fromscholars in recent years and have been described as among the best ways to store knowledge persistently. This workshop will introduce you to the benefits of using plain text files and simple markup formats to create flexible\, robust\, and future-proof workflows for digital scholarship\, research\, and knowlege. We will begin with a brief introduction to the Markdown text format andcreate a short sample document which with the use of a few simple tools that can be converted into a website\, dynamic slideshow presentation\, PDF\, and even a formatted PhD thesis. We will also cover how to migrate existing “closed” files like Word documents and PowerPoint presentations into more accessible plain text Markdown (or similar formats like Asciidoc)\, for archival\, collaboration\, version control\, and other purposes.\n\nPrerequisites:\n\n* A text editor (note: not a word processor!) that can save in plain text format. A good choice is VSCode https://code.visualstudio.com/.\n\nHelpful\, but not required:\n\n* A GitHub.com or Gitlab.com account. We’ll demonstrate how to use GitHub Pages to host a static site. For a more complete introduction to creating static sites with Github Pages\, please see the Introduction to Jekyll (https://ubc-library-rc.github.io/intro-jekyll/) workshop.\n* Some familiarity with working in a command line / Unix shell interface. Some of the tools we will introduce make use of the command-line\, but there are usually alternatives and this is not required. If you’d like to learn more about the command-line shell before you start\, please take a look at this workshop Introduction to the Unix Shell (https://ubc-library-rc.github.io/intro-shell/).\n* Some familiarity with Git. If you’d like to learn more about Git and GitHub before going any further\, please see this workshop: Introduction to Git and Github (https://ubc-library-rc.github.io/intro-git/). \n  \nThis workshop is part of the Core Skills series. \n\nIf you have questions\, concerns\, or accessibility needs\, please email digital.scholarship@ubc.ca. \nTo keep up-to-date with all our workshops\, consults\, and events\, subscribe to the UBC Library Research Commons monthly newsletter.
