Top 10 UBC Events to Check Out in July

The days are getting longer, the sun is shining brighter, and life is looking better. The most beautiful time of the year for Vancouver sees no shortage of events at UBC, as this month we have a blueberry festival, a chef cook-off, public lecture series, and more! 


 

July 1 – Canada Day Run and Celebration at Wesbrook

Celebrate Canada’s 150th birthday with this Running Room tradition, through Wesbrook Village and Pacific Spirit park. Choose between a 1km, 5km, or 10km race!

July 2 – The Pursuit of Excellence and the Perils of Perfectionism

With a culture that surrounds us with images of perfect bodies, perfect houses, and perfect lives, it’s not out of the ordinary to strive for perfection. However, sometimes chasing excellence can lead us to dark thoughts, unhealthy obsessions, and loss of passion. Explore the assets and liabilities of perfectionism at this free lecture, part of Regent College’s 2018 Summer Evening Public Lecture Series.

July 8 – Coral Reefs are Way Cool because…

This lecture led by Dr. Sarah Joy Bittick showcases some way cool coral reef secrets from her experience as a marine field biologist in the French Polynesia and the Eastern Tropical Pacific. Highlights include exciting coral reef videos and research considering the human impacts on coral reefs- and what this means for the future of snorkelling.

July 12 – Long Table Dinner at the UBC Farm

This outdoor long table dinner sees a five-course, locally-sourced, farm-to-table menu. Celebrate local food and support scholar’s kitchen under twinkly lights and live music at the UBC Farm’s Poplar Grove. The first of two dates is happening Thursday, July 12. Vegetarian options are available, and all proceeds go to the Centre for Sustainable Food Systems at UBC.

July 14 – Summer Foraging Workshop

Learn how to safely identify and cook wild berries, edible plants, shoots, and leaves this summer at this introductory workshop. Join professional wildcraft guide and Chef Robin Kort on a guided forest walk to learn about cattails, liquorice fern, nettles, wild berries, and anything else you may find on the walk!

July 17, 18, 19 – UBC Blueberry Festival

Celebrate your favourite little blue fruit with a FREE blueberry pancake breakfast, local recipes, tons of baked goods, chef demos, and more- for 3 days in front of the UBC bookstore, starting at 9 am on July 17.

July 19 – UBC Chef Challenge

The UBC Chef Challenge is back, bigger and better than ever for its fifth year. This year, we see five of UBC’s best culinary teams going head to head to pair one of five craft BC brews with their gastronomic creations. Competitors include Virtuous pie, St. John’s College, Biercraft, Koerner’s Pub, and UBC Food Services – come be the judge. 

July 19 – Beaty Nocturnal

Come for a night at the museum! Every third Thursday of the month sees the Beaty museum open late, offering activities until 8:30pm. The next occurrence of this is on July 19- enter by donation.

July 22 – Food Forest Design (Sustainable Design Series #2)

This workshop, part of the “sustainable design” series, explores food forest design and the many uses of trees! From food to fuel, how they affect precipitation, water retention and our climate, trees are an integral part of our everyday life. This workshop will also teach you how to best maintain a food forest and garden, in order to get optimal production.
