Top 10 UBC Events to Attend in December

There’s a lot happening at UBC this December, so mark your calendars with our top 10 events for the month. They’re the perfect opportunity to spend some quality time with friends and family as the year wraps up.


1. December 1: Holiday Central 2017 at the Robert H. Lee Alumni Centre

You’re invited to drop in for coffee and tea, listen to holiday music by the fire, and get into the festive spirit. Coffee and tea will be available until from 7:30 – 10:30 am, just bring along a non-perishable item or cash donation to support the AMS Food Bank. The 2nd annual Cocktails and Carols will be taking place at 4:00 pm the same day. Drop by from December 2 – 23 to vote for your favourite tree in the Christmas Tree Competition.

 

2. December 1: Holiday Mashup

Ring in the holiday season with UBC Music Initiative’s second annual Holiday Mashup as they collaborate with the Heart of the City Piano Program and Shine On Music to create an evening aimed to connect and engage the community of musicians at UBC. Enjoy performances from UBC’s music clubs and UBC president Santa Ono. The event will be complete with dinner, dessert, drinks, and an open-mic. Don’t miss out on a memorable night packed with music, food, and great company.

 

3. December 2: Wesbrook Holiday Craft Fair

Wesbrook Community Centre will be hosting their second annual holiday marketplace for artisanal creativity and local crafters. Over 40 vendors and artists will be selling jewelry, bath and body items, textiles, ceramics, and many more unique goods. Some of your favourite neighbourhood stores will also be there, including Doughgirls Comfort Kitchen and Bakeshop, Running Room, and the Wesbrook Village team. It’s the perfect Saturday to pick up some gifts from local crafters.

 

4. December 4: The Hundred-Year Trek: A History of Student Life at UBC Book Launch

It’s the launch of The Hundred-Year Trek: A History of Student Life at UBC featuring hundreds of photos and illustrations from the AMS archives showing student struggles and achievements through the years. Moderated by Justin McElroy, the evening will feature a panel discussion with Hundred-Year Trek author Sheldon Goldfarb and a cast of UBC characters including Dave Frank, Sophia Haque, Nestor Korchinksy, and Ava Nasiri. Be sure to bring along a small memento you would like to add to the Spring 2018 time capsule.

 

5. December 5: Shooting Ghosts: An Evening with Finbarr O’Reilly

Join internationally-acclaimed photographer, Finbarr O’Reilly, as he shares his brand new book, Shooting Ghosts. Co-authored with U.S. Marine, Thomas Brennan, the book details the unpredictability of war and its aftermath. The photographs document not only Brennan’s experience with the war itself, but also his post-war experiences. The evening will include a keynote by the author followed by a reception.

 

6. December 7: MOA Night Shift – Supernatural Vibes

Come celebrate Northwest Coast matriarch voices to honour women’s stories, talents and histories. Emcee Suzette Amaya has curated an all-female lineup of Indigenous spoken word and hip-hop performers from around the Northwest Coast to put on an unforgettable performance. While you’re there, check out MOA’s new Gallery of Northwest Coast Masterworks and the inaugural exhibit, In A Different Light.

 

7. December 8: Grand Rounds – Virtual Care & Vaccine Games: Tech & the Future of Public Health

It’s the School of Population and Public Health’s last Grand Rounds of the year. An expert panel will be covering the current topic of how technologies are pushing public health into the future. Associate Professor Kimberlyn McGrail will talk about telemedicine in British Columbia, Clinical Associate Professor Mark Gilbert will discuss GetCheckedOnline, and I Boost Immunity’s Content Strategist Ian Roe will talk about gamifying immunization.

 

8. December 13: UBC Winter Bang! Festival

UBC Music students will be performing electroacoustic music throughout the day using computer instruments and audio/video processes. Come see how they control their instruments and processes through gesture tracking of traditional instruments, dance, piano or string performance, or by using webcams, Kinect’s, Wii’s, accelerometers, game controls, custom circuits, Arduinos, smartphones, and tablets. It will be a music experience unlike anything you have experienced before.

 

9. December  15 – 16: Christmas Tree Sale 2017

Pick up your Christmas tree at the Forestry Undergraduate Society’s third annual Christmas tree sale. The trees planted at the UBC Farm were donated by Pelton Reforestation, Cairnpark Nursery, and Pacific Regeneration Technologies. Revenue generated from the sale of trees this year will go to support the Forestry Undergraduate Society and a portion of proceeds from every sale will be donated to the UBC Farm and to an international charity that benefits communities, forests, and the environment.

 

10. December 15: The Four Seasons with violinist Philippe Quint

As part of the Classical Traditions series at the Chan Centre, the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra will be putting on a traditional presentation of Vivaldi’s timeless classic, The Four Seasons. Philippe Quint, one of the most elegant and poetic violinists in the world today, perform this classic favourite, on the magnificent 1708 “Ruby” Stradivarius violin.
