SUMMARY:Climate Conversations: Relational Approaches to Climate Research Engagement
DESCRIPTION:Those engaging in climate solutions research come from every academic discipline – and they use a broad range of methods and approaches to match.  One common responsibility regardless of discipline or research approach\, is the need to engage in critical climate conversations with research partners\, collaborators\, and community members.\nJoin us for a Climate Conversation\, hosted by Dr. Love-Ese Chile\, Network Manager for the BC Agricultural Climate Action Research Network based at the Centre of Sustainable Food Systems\, and Visiting Scholar Dr. Jill Zarestky\, associate professor in the Adult Education and Training program in the School of Education at Colorado State University as we explore relational ways of engaging with research partners\, collaborators\, and community members in climate conversations. \n\n\n\nDr. Love-Ese Chile is known for turning research into real-world impact. With a deep commitment to innovation\, accessibility\, and meaningful change\, she uses storytelling to spark dialogue and connect diverse stakeholders. As Network Manager\, Love-Ese guides her team in organizing knowledge-sharing events\, translating complex research into clear\, accessible language\, and managing collaborative projects that bridge academia\, government\, and industry. \nLove-Ese holds a PhD in Chemistry from the University of British Columbia. Her leadership and contributions have been recognized with several national awards\, including the 2024 Clean50 Emerging Leader Award\, the 2023 UBC Chemistry Young Alumnus Award\, and the 2024 Gloria Baylis Award for Entrepreneurship and Advocacy from the Canadian Black Scientist Network. \n\n\nDr. Jill Zarestky is an associate professor in the Colorado State University School of Education. Her research focuses on how adults can continue learning even after they have finished their formal educations. \nKeeping up with science and technology is an ongoing challenge for adults. Zarestky studies how people can learn about these topics throughout their lives. Her research focuses on the pieces and ways adults continue to learn and engage with exciting innovations\, such as artificial intelligence\, or adapt to global challenges like climate change. \nZarestky earned her Ph.D. from Texas A&M University. Her research has been published in Adult Education Quarterly\, Adult Learning\, Environment\, Development and Sustainability and more. \n\n\n\nThe Climate Conversation series is an informal opportunity to engage in dialogue with both the hosts and other participants. The hosts will begin the session by sharing insights from their experience\, and open the conversation to all participants. \nBring your own brown bag lunch; we will provide the cookies and iced tea!  Registration is not required\, but if you provide your contact information on the event page on our website\, we will send you a reminder for the event.

SUMMARY:Expanding Neonatal and Pediatric Surgical Care in Conflict-Affected Settings: The MSF Experience
DESCRIPTION:On behalf of the UBC Branch for Global Surgery and the Institute for Global Health at BC Children’s and Women’s Hospital (IGH-CW)\, we invite you to attend a talk on “Expanding Neonatal and Pediatric Surgical Care in Conflict-Affected Settings: The MSF Experience” featuring Dr. Shahrzad Joharifard and Dr. Jean-Pierre Létoquart. \nWhen: Wednesday\, May 27\, 2026\, 7:00 – 8:00 AM \nWhere: BC Children’s Hospital TACC – Rooms T4-546 A&B\n7:00–8:00 AM PT + virtual \nIn many conflict-affected settings\, children comprise the majority of the population\, yet neonatal and pediatric surgical care remains largely absent from humanitarian surgical priorities. While emergency surgical programs have expanded globally\, children with congenital conditions and other complex surgical diseases often remain without access to specialized surgical\, anesthesia\, and perioperative care\, resulting in preventable disability\, chronic morbidity\, and death. \nIn this talk\, pediatric surgeon Shahrzad Joharifard and longtime MSF-France surgical advisor Jean-Pierre Létoquart discuss ongoing efforts within Médecins Sans Frontières to expand access to pediatric surgical care in some of the world’s most resource-constrained settings. Through clinical cases and field experience\, they explore the challenges of delivering complex neonatal and pediatric surgical care in environments with limited anesthesia\, nursing\, ICU\, and follow-up infrastructure\, and consider what ethical\, sustainable pediatric surgical care should look like in humanitarian medicine. \nZoom information: \nZoom link: https://ubc.zoom.us/j/68210751381?pwd=2vfjnADyKkpNeu2wnwAZkwnD51UKUc.1 \nMeeting ID: 682 1075 1381 \nPasscode: 236416 \n

SUMMARY:Combating anti-Asian Racism and Xenophobia: Toward a Model of Pandemic Anti-racism Education in Post-Covid-19 Canada
DESCRIPTION:Canada is often positioned as a global model of multiculturalism\, but what happens when that narrative is disrupted? \nIn this talk\, Dr. Shibao Guo will examine how COVID-19 reignited anti-Asian racism and xenophobia\, particularly targeting Chinese Canadians. Using critical discourse analysis\, this presentation critically analyses incidents against Chinese Canadians who were reported in popular press during the pandemic pertaining to anti-Asian and anti-Chinese racism and xenophobia in multicultural Canada. To combat and eliminate racism\, he will propose a framework of pandemic anti-racism education for the purpose of achieving social justice in post-COVID-19 Canada. \nThe event will begin with a presentation\, followed by a Q&A session\, and conclude with an informal networking period for attendees to connect with Dr. Guo. Refreshments will be provided. This is a hybrid event\, and the Zoom link will be shared the day prior. \nThis session aims to advance anti-racist awareness and action across campus and is therefore open to all members of the UBC community.

SUMMARY:The Practice of Realignment\, or\, Getting Unstuck - Staying on Track in Grad School Series
DESCRIPTION:In this session\, we present a process for graduate students to use to realign quickly and gracefully when you have found yourself off track or feeling misaligned from your goals. In the prior sessions\, we have discussed building practices to increase self-awareness\, get organized\, find motivation and take consistent action\, but even with all this in place\, life will throw you curveballs that make you feel disoriented\, off track\, or even stuck. Progress is not linear. \nWe hope that the strategies we share will help you to shift your mindset and behaviour to quickly realign when you find yourself slipping into old habits\, and to gracefully pivot when life throws you a curveball and you find yourself unable to maintain your routine\, whether that be for your academic work\, self-care\, or whatever goal you are working on. \nIn this session you will: \n\nUnderstand what misalignment and realignment is\nReflect on your experience of getting off track\, stuck\, or “hooked”\nLearn steps to take to help you get back on track\nLearn strategies to “unhook” through managing your thoughts\, emotions and behaviours\nConsider the importance of recovery and self-discipline for realignment\nUnderstand that recommitment is a daily practice\nConsider recruiting a support team and learn about resources\n\nThis session is part of the Staying on Track Series: A 5-part framework to make change stick for good. \nWe are living at a time when there is no shortage of information at your fingertips for how you could be taking better care of yourself or working towards your goals. But the problem with change is rarely a case of not knowing what to do. The real challenge many of us face is doing the things that would improve our well-being or progress towards our goal with realistic planning\, strategies that work\, and consistency. In other words\, there is a gap between knowing and doing. \nIn this series you will learn a few key skill sets that\, when applied\, will help you take better care of yourself and work towards your goals with greater consistency and ease. Although the sessions work together\, they can be attended independently. Please come prepared to discuss these topics with other students (breakout rooms may be used)\, and engage in personal reflection. You may wish to have paper and a pen ready for these reflections. Sessions will not be recorded. Attendees will be sent slides and resources following the session. \nPast topics:\nOctober 9th: Stuck to Steady: Aligning Habits with Your Goals\nNovember 17th: Self-Care Strategies for Managing Stress and Avoiding Burnout\nFebruary 24th: Imposter Phenomenon\nMarch 31st: Waiting for Motivation? Do This Instead! \nFacilitators\nKaren Flood (she/her)\, Ph.D. is a Registered Psychologist with UBC Counselling Services. She is the Practicum Coordinator with Counselling Services\, and holds special interests in supporting graduate students\, mature students\, and students with physical health concerns. She is an alumnus of UBC’s Faculty of Education\, Dept. of Educational and Counselling Psychology and Special Education. \nRia Nishikawara (she/her) is a Pre-doctoral Intern at UBC Counselling Services\, where she offers individual and group counselling. She is a PhD Candidate in Counselling Psychology at UBC\, with research focused on chronic pain/illness\, patient-provider alliance\, career/life transitions\, and health equity. Before doctoral studies\, Ria worked in private practice as a counsellor as well as in a tertiary healthcare setting\, supporting people with chronic pelvic pain. \n\n\n\nRegistration Information\n\nRegistration is open to current UBC graduate students. After registering\, you will receive a confirmation email at the e-mail associated with your community.grad.ubc.ca account. If you experience any difficulty using the online registration tool\, please e-mail us at graduate.pathways@ubc.ca with your full name\, your program\, department and/or your UBC affiliation. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAccessibility\nIf you have a disability or medical condition that may affect your full participation in the event\, please email graduate.pathways@ubc.ca\, 604-827-4578\, well in advance of the event. \n\n\nRegistration Opens\n\nMonday\, March 30\, 2026 at 9 AM

SUMMARY:Legality and Impunity in Times of Crisis
DESCRIPTION:The world is in the throes of multiple crises\, from ongoing genocide and settler colonial violence\, to evolving forms of authoritarian governance and imperial warfare. The theme of ‘impunity’ has become part of mainstream political discourse as both cause and effect of the current international (dis)order. What are the psycho-political and affective dimensions of impunity? How do performances of impunity impact communities and political institutions? What is the political function of impunity in the current conjuncture? How does the law produce impunity and attend to its effects? \nThis symposium will gather critical legal scholars\, psychoanalysts\, artists and political theorists from around the world to discuss legality\, impunity and crisis in historical and contemporary forms\, drawing on a wide range of contexts\, methods and approaches\, including: Marwa Arsanios\, Suhad Bishara\, Moyukh Chatterjee\, Zahid R. Chaudhary\, Kamari Clarke\, Nisrin Elamin\, Sarah Hunt Tłaliłila’ogwa\, Gail Lewis\, Daniel Renwick\, Ken Reyes\, Gustavo Jose Rojas-Paez\, Lara Sheehi\, Nimer Sultany\, Vanessa Thompson and Sujith Xavier.
