Luckily\, research shows that with the right techniques\, learning outcomes in large classes can be just as strong as those in smaller ones. And good news! These skills can be learned! \nJoin Brett Gilley\, Professor of Teaching in Earth Ocean and Atmospheric Sciences at the University of British Columbia for a discussion about the challenges and benefits of teaching in large classes and how to improve your large group teaching skills. \nPlease register to secure your spot.\nRegister

SUMMARY:Make-a-thon: Developing Teaching Materials with AI
DESCRIPTION:This event is part of the Summer Institute taking place from August 17 – 20\, 2026. \nThis in-person\, 2-hour Make-a-thon offers faculty a hands-on opportunity to explore how generative AI can support the development of teaching materials. SUMMARY:Course Design Intensive
DESCRIPTION:Apply by August 6 \nThe Course Design Intensive (CDI) will be offered in August 2026 for faculty members who would like to re/design a for-credit course they will be offering in September or later.   \nThe CDI is an intensive program in which participants work\, individually and collaboratively\, to design or re-design a course they are (or will be) teaching. Throughout the workshop\, participants will acquire a broadened understanding of course design concepts\, learn to incorporate EDI practices\, and gain skills and tools they can apply to their own course. The focus of the workshop is on having participants work with the major concepts and questions that need to be considered as they design a course. Ultimately\, the goal of the CDI is to support instructors as they work to enhance their students’ learning.  \nApplication Process \nApplications close on August 6\, 2026  \nDuring this application process for the CDI\, you will be asked about details of your course\, your previous course design experience\, your teaching experience\, and your learning goals for the CDI. The facilitators of the CDI will review your application and contact you by email in about two weeks.  \nFormat of the CDI  \nThe CDI is a two-week workshop that combines synchronous and asynchronous learning activities. Before our official launching meeting\, you’ll engage in independent reading and reflection through guided activities. We’ll then officially meet in person on August 10 to share insights and consolidate our learning.  \nFollowing this\, you’ll continue developing your course independently while participating in collaborative Zoom sessions on August 12 and 14 focused on key aspects of course design. Throughout the two weeks\, there will also be opportunities for consultations and check-ins with facilitators.  \nThe CDI follows a “flipped” model\, meaning you’ll complete preparatory work ahead of each session\, which we’ll build upon during our synchronous meetings. We’ll reconvene in person on August 24 to refine your course design and prepare for a strong start to the teaching term.  \nAugust 2026 (Hybrid)  \nThe workshop consists of two in-person sessions and two Zoom sessions.  \n\nLaunch Session: August 10\, 1:00 PM – 3:00 PM\, Seminar Room 2.22\n\n\nAssessment Design: August 12\, 10:00 AM – 12:00 PM\, Zoom \n\n\nLearning Activity Design: August 14\, 10:00 AM – 12:00 PM\, Zoom \n\n\nWrap-up & Launch Forward Session: August 24\, 1:00 PM – 3:00 PM\, Seminar Room 2.22\n\nFor more information\, please contact judy.chan@ubc.ca. \nPlease register to secure your spot.\nRegister

SUMMARY:AI for Coding: Explore\, Prompt\, and Build with GitHub Copilot
DESCRIPTION:In the third part of our AI for Coding series\, we will set up a GitHub Codespace environment. Here we will learn how to use GitHub Copilot to enhance our data exploration and coding . Working with a sample dataset\, we’ll practice writing clear prompts and use Copilot’s chat features to generate R code to load\, clean\, and visualize the data. \nThis workshop builds on the environment participants set up in part two of the series. Prior experience with GitHub is not required\, but to participate fully you will need a free GitHub account. \n  \nAbout the series: AI for Coding consists of three 30-minute workshops designed to help you use Large Language Models (LLMs) to support exploratory data analysis.
