Writing Positionality Statements from the Lens of Anti-Oppression and Anti-Racism

In this workshop, you will be introduced to key concepts, reflective practices, and definitions that assist in exploring identity and positionality; important tools for visioning, creating, and choosing stylistic choices for positionality statement writing. This work will assist you in unpacking concepts such as power and privilege and reflect on how expressions of interpersonal and systemic power and privilege operate in research and broadly, teaching and learning. With a focus on exploring personal and research value systems that inform positionality statements, this session will weave together theoretical and methodological approaches to assist you in engaging in deep critical reflection on their personal approaches to research and writing.

The workshop includes  active discussion and interactive opportunities to reflect on the necessity of positionality statements across a variety of contexts in academia, including research publications, syllabi, and grant applications. By the end of session,  you will have developed an emerging toolbox of strategies and approaches to continuously reflection of positionality and approaches to positionality writing.

Intended Learning Outcomes

• Reflect on one’s own positionality, identities, and personal and institutional power and privileges through social location exercises
• Review theoretical and methodological frameworks that can inform the shaping of a positionality statement, specifically critical social theoretic approaches to shaping positionality statement and overall research activities
• Consider how a variety of experiences and approaches inform the development of individual positionality statements
• Develop potential strategies on placing positionality statements for different audiences and genres
