Writing in STEM: Writing for Clarity in Complexity

November 15, 2022 @ 10:00 am - 12:00 pm

Writing at the graduate level involves bringing complex and technical ideas together, through description and interpretations of causation, correlation and more. Building this complexity in long texts is itself a complex process, requiring the simultaneous management of individual technical words, phrasing, and whole sentences and paragraphs to layer meanings together. This hybrid workshop draws on research into thesis-drafting and sociology of education to share ways of understanding how complexity is presented in language. With this framework, you can better understand how to move your writing from descriptions of discrete elements to elaborated articulations of complexity without overwhelming your reader; and importantly, you’ll understand how to unpack your complexity when needed.

Facilitator: Dr. Jodie Martin is an educational linguist specializing in academic writing, who currently works as an Academic English Lecturer in the Science stream at Vantage College.
