Understanding Mental Health

Understanding mental health can be difficult. Learning how to support someone who might be in a mental health crisis can be even more challenging. The goal of this session is to increase mental health literacy while providing tools and skills to respond effectively in a caring and respectful way.

Date and Time: Part 1: Jan 13 2022 9:00 a.m-9:50 a.m. Part 2: Jan 20, 2022 9:00 a.m-9:50 a.m.

Attendance: Please attend both Part 1 and 2 of this workshop.

Location: Zoom.

Participants will:

Learn to better understand mental health and mental illness
Understand structural and social stigma as barriers to seeking help
Learn how to respond when concerned about a family member, friend or colleague
Audience: Staff and faculty, particularly those in front-facing or first-responder roles.

Time: 100 minutes (2 x 50-minute sessions)

Facilitator: Amanda Swoboda is with Workplace Health and Wellbeing, Human Resources UBC Okanagan. Amanda’s (she/her) work involves coordinating health promotion events, campaigns, delivering mental health training, and consulting with leaders and teams to support psychological health and safety in the workplace. Amanda is passionate about empowering individual wellness and safe and supportive workplace culture. Amanda has over 20 years of experience working in community mental health settings, from supporting individuals as part of the de-institutionalization movement, psycho-social programming, community based research and workplace mental health training. Amanda has a Bachelor Degree in Social Work.
