THE ARSONISTS Pre-Show Dialogue: Climate Complicity and Complacency

Frederic Wood Theatre, UBC

“If the thought of radical change scares you more than the thought of disaster, what can you do to stop the disaster?”

The Arsonists

Do you ever feel overwhelmed at the thought of climate change and its impacts? Join us before “The Arsonists” for a thought-provoking conversation inspired by the play’s theme of the cost of complacency. Participate in a dialogue about why we resist changes that would reduce climate impacts and collectively reflect on what we can do to move beyond our complicity to take transformative climate action.

Join us to find out more about the upcoming UBC Climate Emergency Week with collective imagining, mingling, snacks and a moderated conversation about exploring climate change through the themes in The Arsonists – a darkly comedic and thought-provoking political satire. Free! Seating is limited – RSVP

Followed by a performance of THE ARSONISTS at The Chan Centre…

THE ARSONISTS Curtain: 7:30PM

By Max Frisch, Directed by Stephen Heatley

Telus Studio, Chan Centre, UBC (Alumni Night – 2 for 1 tickets for UBC Alumni)

The town is plagued by acts of arson, yet upstanding businessman and model citizen Biedermann remains unperturbed. Ever the hospitable host, he welcomes two new guests into his home. He’s so accommodating, he even helps them store drums of gasoline in his attic and offers them a light. Originally written as a reflection on the rise of both Nazism and Communism, The Arsonists is a timely political satire about the cost of complacency. THE ARSONISTS runs at the Chan Centre Jan 29 – Feb 8. More

The evening is presented in collaboration with UBC theatre & Film and UBC Sustainability Hub in advance of UBC Climate Emergency Week, February 2025. Discover all the events!
