Strategizing Within the System: Spotlighting the Work of Marsha Obi—Lessons from the Third World in Decolonizing Higher Education
November 25 @ 10:00 am - 12:00 pm
This November, the anti-racist teaching and learning program (A-RTL) at CTLT is elated to present a session takeover titled “Strategizing within the System”; a session designed to critically discuss and explore the facilitators and barriers to integrating anti-racist pedagogies and practices into higher education institutions. This November, we welcome Dr. Marsha Obi, Assistant Professor at UBC within the Institute of Gender, Race, Sexuality and Social Justice, to share practices from her renowned book, Lessons from the Third World in Decolonizing Higher Education. The aim of this session is to curate a low stake and engaged introduction to three questions that are important in conceptualizing decolonization tools in Canadian higher education classroom environments. Decolonization increases student engagement and belonging within classrooms. The three questions are:
- How do we understand and integrate non-western intellectual traditions into higher education teaching?
- How can we broaden the ideas, voices, and sources that shape our understanding of a discipline?
- In what concrete ways can we make space for different ways of knowing and understanding the world?
We hope this session leaves participants teeming with ideas, strategies, and entry points to thinking through and acting on decolonial methods to teaching and learning, inspired by the Global South and the Caribbean.
Intended Learning Outcomes
- Deeply listen and reflect on processes and practices of decoloniality from global pedagogical perspectives
- Explore the tools, tips, barriers, and reflections in engaging in decolonial methods to teaching and learning through gaining exposure to practices of the “Third World”
- Explore connections with UBC’s teaching and learning community, building a network of like-minded students, staff and faculty passionate about equity and anti-racism
