Slow Fashion Season, Jan 1 – Mar 27 | Fast fashion, textile waste, and unsustainable clothing consumption are global environmental problems. Can we make a difference, here and now, in the ways we consume and produce clothing? The Circular Textiles, Sustainable Fibre research cluster at UBC presents Slow Fashion Season to ignite change.

Check out our Fashion Design Challenges, over one dozen free Maker Workshops with many still to be announced, a Symposium and more. Finalists in our Student Design Challenge (open to Vancouver post-secondary students as well as Musqueam, UBC faculty, staff and alumni) will have the opportunity to be in our Slow Fashion Exhibition, Fashion Show at MOA UBC and to win prizes! Here’s just a sample of upcoming workshops:

  • Jan 1 – Feb 25: Sustainable Fashion Challenge
  • Jan 16, Friday, 4-7PM: Sew Many Threads, 01 Repair | Led by Emily Carr University of Art + Design students Sophia Ryznar, Sarah Wohlgemuth, Nabi Park, Emilia Abundis, Ophir Barzilay, Kimberly Brown, Saanvi Bhat and Camelia Han
  • Jan 23, 4-6PM: Visible Mending| Discover the Japanese technique of Sashiko with Bianca Del Rio Kodato and Kairn Zhou
  • Jan 27, 12-2PM: Intro to Weaving led by Germaine Koh | Learn the basics of weaving, a textile-making tradition used around the world, and make your own piece of fabric from textile waste.
  • Feb 3, 12-2PMDesigning From Waste| Led by Ana d’Carvalho of LaSalle College Vancouver this workshop includes 45-minute lecture on methods of fashion upcycling, followed by work time. This event is for those looking to re-use textile waste at both macro and micro scales.

Slow Fashion Season 2026 is produced by the interdisciplinary Slow Fashion: Circular Textiles, Sustainable Fibre Research Cluster, two dozen artists, designers, engineers, historians, curators, and materials researchers based at UBC and other schools, plus community and industry partners, all working towards more sustainable, conscientious use and production of clothing.
