Screening of GOLDEN GATE GIRLS Documentary
September 16, 2025 @ 3:45 am
GOLDEN GATE GIRLS, directed by S. Louisa Wei, is the story of filmmaker Esther Eng, the first woman to direct Chinese-language film in the US, and the most prominent women director in Hong Kong in the 1930s. A San Francisco native and open lesbian, her contribution to film history is sadly overlooked and most of her eleven feature films are mostly lost. However, this documentary paints a fascinating picture of Eng’s career–how she broke through gender and racial boundaires in both Hollywood and Hong Kong, at a time when opportunities for women were few and far between.
Monday September 15th at the NORM THEATRE, 6138 Student Union Boulevard, UBC.
Doors open at 5:45; Screening at 6, Q&A with director S. Louisa Wei afterward.
