Marking for Method and Accuracy, and Giving Effective Feedback

This session is open to UBC TAs. This session is not open to staff, faculty or UBC alumni.

This session is designed for TAs who mark quantitative assignments, such as problem sets, lab reports, and other work involving method, accuracy, and scientific reasoning. While these types of assignments are particularly common in Science and Engineering, the session is relevant to TAs across disciplines who assess this kind of work. We will explore how to align marking and feedback with the purpose of an assessment, apply rubrics and marking guides consistently, and distinguish between different aspects of student work when evaluating their performance. The session will also consider how to provide constructive, actionable feedback and when it is more effective to give students a direct answer versus using questions to support their reflection and learning. 

By the end of this session, participants will be able to apply marking criteria consistently, provide feedback that supports future learning, and select appropriate approaches for guiding students through common marking and feedback challenges
