Marking for Argument and Interpretation, and Giving Effective Feedback

This session is open to UBC TAs. This session is not open to staff, faculty or UBC alumni.

This session is designed for TAs who mark qualitative assignments, such as essays, written responses, and other work involving argument, interpretation, and critical analysis. While these types of assignments are particularly common in Arts & Humanities, the session is relevant to TAs across disciplines who assess this kind of qualitative work. We will explore what to look for when evaluating qualitative assignments, including how to balance objective criteria with the subjective dimensions of interpretation, as well as practical strategies for marking consistently and fairly. The session will also focus on providing constructive, meaningful feedback that supports student learning, including when to provide answers or guidance and when to use questions to prompt students to think more deeply about their work. 

By the end of this session, participants will be able to identify key elements to look for when marking qualitative work, apply strategies for consistent and fair marking, and provide effective feedback that supports student learning and deeper engagement with their ideas.
