Lunar New Year – Lion Dance

We are kicking off our 25th Anniversary in 2022 with a Lion Dance at St. John’s College!
The historical background of the Lion Dance and the Dragon Dance originates as a way to chase evil spirits and welcome in prosperous times and each have unique dance styles. In the village of Pok Fu Lam the Fire Dragon was used to drive away bad luck and the plague. It won’t hurt if the Lion, drum and cymbals chase away Omicron and any of its variant friends too!
The Lion Dance will begin at 11 am sharp. Vancity Lion Dance will do a walkabout outside before performing inside our Dining Hall. For the safety of the performers and our audience, there is no inside viewing permitted. You may watch online on Zoom or from outside through the windows facing the St. John’s College courtyard – masks and physical distancing are required.
Please note that an online virtual Lion Dance lesson is being offered by the performers after the dance!! If you are interested in taking the lesson, then you will want to be viewing the performance on Zoom in a place where you have room to safely move.
