Dr. Mary Shuk Han Wong, writer and associate professor at the Department of Chinese of Lingnan University, Hong Kong, will visit UBC in person and talk about the development of Hong Kong cinema and adaptation from 1914 to 2024. The abstract of her talk, which will be conducted in English, is as follows:
The number of literary works adapted into Hong Kong films has decreased significantly from its peak in the middle of the last century to the point where it can even be said to have disappeared as a myth. Undoubtedly, since the second half of the last century, Hong Kong cinema and literature have drifted apart. However, in the changing context, we can still see the adaptation of individual creative works, and some authors still strive to cross-border creation within the film business, making movies and writing novels. The relationship between Hong Kong cinema and adaptations (particularly Hong Kong literature) in the past one hundred years is worthy of our deep thought.
This is a free and in-person event.
