Learning from the Past to Reimagine the Future of Oceans and Fisheries: Historical Marine Ecology in the Northeast Pacific

October 17 @ 11:00 am - 12:00 pm

Speaker: Dr. Loren McClenachan
Associate professor & Canada Research Chair, ocean history and sustainability, University of Victoria

Historical marine ecology has provided insights into long-term change relevant to managing marine fisheries and coastal ecosystems that are relevant to reimagining the future, providing insights into fisheries management, species recovery, and climate resilience.

This talk will focus on historical marine ecology in the Northeast Pacific, describing insights from recent work, including sea otters California, clams in British Columbia and Pacific cod Alaska. Together this growing body of evidence from the past documents changing seascapes and provides a long-term perspective needed for more sustainable and equitable management.
