Getting Into, and Branching Out From, Immunology: A UBC Career of Research, Teaching, Mentoring, and Leadership

February 12 @ 5:00 pm - 6:20 pm

Everyone is an immunologist! For if you’ve recovered from a cold or an infection, you must have wondered how your immune system does this. Despite immense progress in the field of immunology over the timespan of Dr Mike Gold’s career, there are still many unanswered questions. How do many different types of immune cells act in a coordinated manner to keep us healthy? How can we modulate immune responses to provide better protection against pathogens or tumors? What goes awry when we develop autoimmunity or immune cell cancers? To understand how the immune system works, immunologists are incorporating developments from other fields, including mathematics, physics, chemistry, and big-data bioinformatics. This interdisciplinary approach has yielded new insights into many areas of biology (e.g., cancer biology), led to new therapeutic approaches, and fueled the biotechnology sector. Dr Mike Gold and the panel members will touch on many of these points during this discussion focused on the over thirty-year career of Dr Gold at UBC.

This event is open to the general public and does not require registration (but please note that our seating is limited). A reception in the Piano Lounge, Graham House, will follow this event.

Co-organised with UBC Emeritus College.

Panel participants: Dr Mike Gold, Microbiology and Immunology, UBC; Phillip Domeier, Microbiology and Immunology, UBC; Sarah McLeod, Biotechnology Program, BCIT; Joshua Scurll, Vancouver Prostate Centre.
