Cultivating Learning Communities: Introduction to Team-Based Learning

May 7 @ 1:30 pm - 4:30 pm

This event is part of the 2026 Celebrate Learning Week, taking place from May 4 – 8, 2026.

This three-hour online workshop invites educators to explore how meaningful change in teaching can emerge through collaborative growth. Designed for those new to Team-Based Learning (TBL) or curious about active learning and flipped classrooms, the session provides a hands-on introduction to the core structure, sequence, and benefits of TBL.

TBL is an evidence-based collaborative learning approach built around three stages: preparatory work, a readiness assurance process, and team application exercises grounded in specific learning outcomes. This structure creates conditions for shared responsibility in learning, where students build knowledge together through problem-solving and discussion. In this shift away from traditional lecture-based teaching, the instructor moves from “sage on the stage” to “guide on the side,” cultivating a learning community centred on participation, accountability, and mutual support.

By emphasizing peer learning and the application of higher-order concepts, TBL supports durable understanding while fostering inclusive and resilient classroom environments across modalities (online, face-to-face, and beyond). Its design can also help mitigate inappropriate uses of genAI by focusing on in-class, team-based problem solving.

Participants will experience TBL firsthand in this Zoom-based workshop by working in teams through a readiness assurance process and application activities. These experiences will be complemented by brief framing of the underlying theory, along with opportunities to reflect on how TBL can support their own teaching contexts. Together, we will consider how small, intentional shifts in practice can cultivate meaningful, community-driven change in teaching and learning.
