snk̓l̕ip’s power to make the world safe for the peoples to be: Coyote Stories so we can all have a future
Keynote: Bill Cohen
I speak as a Syilx Okanagan artist and educator engaged in Syilxizing Teacher Education with Syilx community organizations, Syilx knowledge keepers, Indigenous and settler colleagues, students and staff in the Okanagan School of Education. I will share understanding about snk̓l̕ip’s (aka Coyote) role in Syilx pedagogy and praxis in the following themes:
Humanizing Indigenous Peoples by Indigenizing with the Indigenous people in whose homeland you are situated for collective Indigeneity, potential for healthy, sustaining cultural and ecological diversity. In the Okanagan, the southern interior of BC and northern interior of Washington State, this means Indigenizing/Syilxizing with Syilx Okanagan peoples.
Coyote stories, sometimes viewed as children’s stories, are more accurately, children of the earth stories, collective accumulated wisdom of Syilx Okanagan peoples, passed on to ignite new understanding, new ways of tolerance, pluralism, appreciation for cultural and ecological diversity and responsibilities for future generations. Coyote stories are critical to address outcomes of colonizing pedagogies and lifeways: fires, floods, pandemics, diminishing ecological and cultural diversity, racialized discourse and injustice, violence against women and the earth mother, children’s unmarked graves at Indian Residential Schools . . .
Can we collectively learn from the past and present, and create the wisdom needed so the peoples to be can have food and well-being security?
